Job Description and Duties

This advertisement is for a Correctional Sergeant, Field Training Sergeant (FTS) position located at Folsom State Prison, Sacramento County. Please indicate this position number on your application: 048-115-9659-001.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented in response to the status of the State budget. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3% reduction in pay in exchange for five (5) hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes.

The FTS may be required to perform work in multiple locations based on institutional needs. Travel will be required.

The FTS positions shall be considered “management” positions as a part of the institutional Seniority Assignments and count toward the 60/40 split.

The FTS is a field representative POSED employee that is allocated to an institution. Unlike management positions, the POSED FTS cannot be job changed by similar practices of typical “management” positions. Incumbents are required to interview and be appointed to this position.

The FTS positions shall be allowed to work voluntary overtime consistent with existing practices.

The FTS shall be subject to involuntary overtime consistent with existing practices.

The FTS shall adhere to local time off/call out procedures consistent with existing practices.

The FTS shall not be re-directed to fill institutional vacancies.

The FTS shall be an appointment to POSED; work locations will be at the respective institutions that they are allocated to.

Individuals who are eligible for Training and Development may be considered for this position.

Working Conditions

The Advanced Learning Institute (ALI), within POSED, is tasked with supporting the Job Shadowing Program and ongoing management, in collaboration with Commission on Correctional Peace Officer Standards & Training and Division of Adult Institutions. The FTS positions are located at institutions and is a satellite POSED position, which assists the Basic Correctional Officer Academy and ALI to transition recently hired Academy Peace Officers to their respective institutions.

About this location -- Folsom State Prison is located approximately 30 miles east of downtown Sacramento and just minutes from old town Folsom.

The grounds of the prison are surrounded by beautiful landscapes and friendly wild animals (deer, squirrels, turkeys, geese, etc.)

Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of Departmental policies and procedures, as well as current issues faced by the Division of Adult Institutions and the Department as a whole
  • Knowledge and experience of critical job posts and incarcerated persons programming, local policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of the Correctional Peace Officer Apprenticeship Program (CPOAP) and the Basic Correctional Officer Academy (BCOA)
  • Supervisory/administrative experience
  • Experience in and knowledge of the development, implementation, and coordination of training, as well as the ability to deliver effective training
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate both orally and in writing, with departmental staff at various levels
  • Good organizational skills including the ability to coordinate, monitor, track, and adjust schedules, maintain training files, and document feedback and observations
  • Ability to analyze situations and take effective action using initiative, resourcefulness, and good judgment
  • Shall create and promote an equitable and inclusive workplace where diversity is celebrated and valued
