The Protein Homeostasis Thematic Research Center(TRC) at BMS is a fundamental Oncology research engine delivering oncology and hematology therapeutics to patients. The TRC has a major focus on exploiting BMS’ expertise in protein degradation to discover and develop therapies aimed at tumor intrinsic vulnerabilities and mechanisms of resistance to existing cancer therapeutics. This focus on protein degradation allows us to attack protein classes that were previously deemed undruggable.

Position Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced pathology scientist to join a Translational Research Pathology group in our San Diego site, supporting the Protein Homeostasis TRC’s drug discovery and translational pathology efforts.

The primary responsibilities of the group are to collaborate with research scientists to support tissue-based target validation, animal model studies, and biomarker research from Discovery through Proof-of-Concept Ph1/II clinical trials. Under the leadership of an MD pathologist, the group provides pathobiology scientific expertise, diagnostic consultation, & histopathology technical support. Histotechnology technical support will include tissue procurement & specimen preparation from human sample collections and animal studies, sample preparation & sectioning, and development/ application of novel IHC, ISH, and multiplex assays & AI/image analysis.

The successful candidate will support pathobiology research in collaboration with research scientists & the pathology team: develop and apply novel tissue-based assays, analyze and interpret data in the context of the overall project, present results to project teams, and support collaboration and assay transfers inside and outside the company. They will also assist in lab operations & support management of the histopathology team under the lab director.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead scientist engaged in developing and verifying novel tissue-based assays (e.g., IHC, ISH), sourcing relevant sample sets, and obtaining research results to inform discovery stage to early clinical projects.
  • Collaborate with research scientists & members of the pathology team (pathology scientists, image analysis scientists & pathologists) to develop experimental design & assay requirements for pathobiology research.
  • Help plan and execute internal and external antibody campaigns when needed.
  • Execute the development & verification of novel tissue-based assays, including multiplex IHC/IF & ISH, and some image analysis.
  • Execute histopathology procedures including formalin fixed tissue trimming, tissue processing and embedding, paraffin block and frozen tissue sectioning, H&E and special stains.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain accurate work documentation, and support assay transfers and cross-validation at CROs.
  • Assist with associated operational tasks such as maintaining and updating tissue bank, slide/block storage, cell pellet, and antibody databases & share responsibilities in lab equipment scheduled maintenance and supply inventory.
  • Work with lead pathologist & researchers to procure needed tissue for specific projects
  • Help manage the histopathology team by assisting with project tracking & mentoring/ training junior scientists as needed under the direction of the lab director.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master’s Degree and 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences with no experience necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education and/or experience in histotechnology/pathology highly preferred.
  • Experience in the biotech/diagnostic industry developing and deploying novel tissue-based assays (e.g., IHC, ISH) to support discovery/translational research by analyzing and interpreting data for project teams.
  • Experience with histopathology techniques & novel IHC/IF/ISH development required. Experience in multiplex assays and image analysis a plus.
  • Should be comfortable working with pathologists in designing, interpreting, and QCing pathobiology research.
  • Good written and oral communication skills are critical, including experience in contributing to writing SOPs, reports, and presentations.
  • The candidate will need to work well within a team and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to re-focus priorities and achieve results in a frequently changing environment.
  • Experience in research pathology lab operations a plus.

Compensation Overview

San Diego - CA - US: $122,810 - $148,814

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
