Stanford University is seeking a Research Data Analyst 2 to manage and analyze large amounts of information, typically technical or scientific in nature, independently with minimal supervision.

Stanford’s Department of Health Policy and Stanford Population Health Sciences (PHS) seek to hire a highly skilled individual to work as a full-time researcher. The position is expected to start in June 2026, although the exact starting date is flexible and negotiable. The position is for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

The researcher will work on projects involving administrative Medicaid data, studying the impacts of policies and interventions affecting low-income children, women, and other individuals covered by Medicaid. The researcher will also work directly with the Center for Population Health Sciences (PHS) to curate and link the Medicaid data to electronic health record data from primary care, and to use those newly linked data for new research projects. The researcher will serve as an expert resource and potentially collaborator with Stanford students, faculty, and other researchers working with the Medicaid data.

This position is ideal for a candidate with experience working with Medicaid data, who is interested in economics or health policy. A successful candidate should exhibit strong attention to detail, time management skills, fluency in a relevant programming language (preferably Stata, SQL, and R), experience in data management and curation, experience managing multiple projects at once, and a willingness to learn new technical skills and gain knowledge in US health policy.

This position is ideal for a candidate with claims data experience, who is also interested in economics or health policy. A successful candidate should exhibit strong attention to detail, time management skills, fluency in a relevant programming language (preferably Stata or R), experience in data management and curation, experience managing multiple projects at once, and a willingness to learn new technical skills and gain knowledge in US health policy.

The position is based at Stanford University. A PhD in economics, health policy, or a related field is preferred.

Duties Include

  • Prioritize and extract data from a variety of sources such as notes, survey results, medical reports, and laboratory data, and maintain its accuracy and completeness.
  • Determine additional data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Design and customize reports based upon data in the database. Oversee and monitor regulatory compliance for utilization of the data.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and eliminate root cause for data problems or justify solutions to be implemented by others.
  • Create complex charts and databases, perform statistical analyses, and develop graphs and tables for publication and presentation.
  • Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests for statistics or surveys.
  • Test prototype software and participate in approval and release process for new software.
  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
  • Develop and/or apply novel data curation, metadata, econometric, and analytic techniques and approaches to healthcare claims data, like Medicaid data.
  • Learn from and collaborate with renowned data science and health experts across Stanford on interesting complex projects utilizing large-scale administrative datasets.
  • Implement data analysis through statistical programming.
  • Mentor clinical investigators on relevant research methods.
  • Identify appropriate statistical tools for analysis.

The expected pay range for this position is $108,002 to $128,138 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs. Desired Qualifications

A PhD in economics, health policy, or a related field is preferred.

The PHS data core consists of a number of commercial claims, EMR, registry, and other administrative data. The successful candidate will have expertise in health care claims data, data management, annotation, and the use of these datasets for population health.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are desired in order to provide feedback to members of the scientific community to facilitate the description of data, effectively provide documentation and specifications to co-workers during research development, and contribute to the drafting of scientific literature and grant applications using results from analyses.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (Desired)

  • Proficient in at least two of R, SAS, SPSS, SQL or STATA.
  • Skills in descriptive analysis, causal inference, and modeling of data.
  • Outstanding ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in at least one area of expertise, which may include coordinating studies; statistical methodology such as missing data or econometrics; statistical computing.

Education & Experience (required)

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (required)

  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
