Medical Facility Architect
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Architect to support large-scale healthcare facility documentation and infrastructure projects. Working under the direction of the Section Chief, this role is responsible for independently planning and executing comprehensive architectural documentation across a complex medical campus.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of facility drawings and records, supporting ongoing operations, renovations, and future construction efforts. The ideal candidate is proactive, technically strong, and experienced in working within multidisciplinary teams in highly regulated environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently plan, coordinate, and execute architectural documentation services for a multi-building healthcare campus, including conducting detailed site investigations and documenting existing buildings, utilities, and infrastructure systems using AutoCAD and Revit
- Prepare accurate, scaled drawings such as floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, and system layouts, incorporating field-verified data and site observations
- Analyze and interpret architectural and engineering documents to identify discrepancies, missing information, and conflicts between design intent and existing conditions, and recommend effective solutions
- Develop and maintain CAD and Revit standards, layering systems, and documentation protocols to ensure consistency and alignment with VA Technical Information Library (TIL) standards and applicable codes
- Update and manage drawing files in coordination with external contractors, reflecting renovations, departmental moves, and facility changes
- Maintain organized drawing archives, project documentation, and record systems, including original building plans and historical data
- Coordinate with engineers, IT, logistics, environmental services, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate documentation and support project planning and execution
- Develop and maintain project schedules for campus-wide documentation efforts, providing regular progress updates to leadership
- Ensure compliance with all applicable codes and standards, including ABAAS, VA design guidelines, ICC, OSHA, IFC, and Life Safety requirements
- Support facility improvement initiatives, including renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and site development projects
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of architectural experience, including at least two (2) years conducting site investigations (healthcare experience preferred)
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (minimum 2 years of experience in each)
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and produce construction drawings and specifications across multiple disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
- Working knowledge of building systems and construction coordination across trades
- Familiarity with healthcare design standards, building codes, fire and life safety requirements, and accessibility guidelines
- Proven ability to identify discrepancies between drawings and real-world conditions through field verification
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on federal or VA healthcare projects
- Familiarity with VA Technical Information Library (TIL) standards and guidelines
- Professional certifications such as NCARB, PMP, EDAC, or LEED accreditation
- Experience supporting large, complex campuses or multi-building documentation programs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Project and/or Microsoft Teams
- Experience managing documentation archives and digital record systems
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, regulated environment
