Departmental Overview The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Position Summary The AV IT Engineer 4 works with Cal's Broadcast Operations Department to orchestrate live event production needs for events produced for ACC Network, ESPN, and other digital platforms. This position serves as a self-motivated, team-oriented problem solver responsible for ensuring all broadcast equipment is in good working order, properly set up, and operated appropriately. This position is responsible for maintaining all broadcast infrastructure and collaborating with full, part-time, and student staff. The AV IT Engineer 4 provides innovative solutions to complex problems within a fast-paced, multi-purpose space supporting an intercollegiate athletics program with 30 teams and 900 student-athletes. This role requires a thorough understanding of the Intercollegiate Athletics mission and goals, as well as compliance with all NCAA and ACC expectations. Responsibilities Broadcast Systems Operations & Live Event Support - 25%- Provide technical execution and engineering support for all live broadcasts, streams, podcasts, studio productions, and videoboard shows. Serve as the primary technical responder during events, ensuring all production systems remain operational and meet ESPN, ACC, and Strawberry Creek Studios quality standards .
Signal Flow, Transmission & REMI Infrastructure - 25%
- Design, maintain, and troubleshoot end-to-end signal paths connecting campus venues to centralized production facilities. Manage contribution feeds, transmission systems, fiber infrastructure, JPEG-XS encoding/decoding, Dante audio transport, and REMI workflows supporting Bishop Ranch operations.
Control Room & Production Technology - 20%
- Configure, operate, and maintain production control room systems including switchers, replay servers, graphics engines, multiviewers, audio consoles, monitoring systems, and associated production technology. Ensure systems are configured properly and optimized for live production workflows.
Communications & RTS Ecosystem - 15%
- Administer and support the campus-wide RTS communications infrastructure, including ODIN frames, keypanels, beltpacks, announcer systems, IFB workflows, and truck integration. Develop and maintain communication architectures that support multiple simultaneous productions across campus venues and Bishop Ranch.
Preventive Maintenance & System Reliability - 5%
- Establish and execute preventative maintenance programs for all broadcast equipment and infrastructure. Monitor system performance, perform repairs, coordinate service needs, manage firmware/software updates, and ensure all systems maintain operational readiness throughout the year.
Engineering Documentation & Asset Management - 5%
- Develop and maintain signal-flow diagrams, technical drawings, patch maps, rack elevations, equipment inventories, maintenance records, and engineering standards. Track equipment lifecycle, warranty status, replacement schedules, and operational history.
Strategic Planning, Capital Projects & Vendor Coordination - 5%
- Support long-term technology planning, facility upgrades, and broadcast infrastructure projects. Collaborate with vendors, integrators, IT, facilities, and production leadership to evaluate emerging technologies, manage implementation projects, and support Cal Studios' future growth and modernization efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Strong creativity and problem-solving abilities to apply principles, practices, and procedures within the discipline to complete difficult assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to create AV flow diagrams, schematics and AV infrastructure drawings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable codes and regulations and ability to provide technical advice based on sound understanding of AV principles and practice.
- Demonstrated experience managing phases of AV projects including obtaining scope, budget, planning, design, bid preparation, installation, inspection, testing and final walk through. Ability to test and operate installed AV IT equipment.
- Knowledge of electronics theory with emphasis on audio, video and communications circuitry, AV IT control systems and signal flow. Knowledge of acoustic design theory.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

- Strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of project objectives.
- Advanced knowledge of audio, video and control systems as well as architectural and cabling requirements.
- Advanced knowledge of AV IT design and field implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a project or team and to maintain a climate of fairness, cooperation and professionalism.
- Expert understanding of broadcast control room engineering for live event production and equipment maintenance. Familiarity with Ross, RTS, Evertz, Calrec production equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Calrec audio systems and Dante workflow.
- Understanding of multi-layer networking, VLAN's, and basic IP protocol.
- Familiarity with Sony, Canon, Fuji, and PTZ broadcast cameras and lenses.
- Knowledge of modern broadcast cabling infrastructure including SMPTE, LC/ST Fiber, Cat6.
- Ability to teach and work with various staff and students to meet Cal and ACC standards.

- Professional certification.

- This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
