The Communications Intern will play a key role in supporting the Communications & Advocacy Department by contributing to a wide range of projects that elevate the San Diego Food Bank’s mission and brand. This position offers hands-on experience in nonprofit communications and marketing, with opportunities to assist in content creation for digital and print platforms, conduct research to support campaigns and media outreach, and help manage and organize digital assets. The intern will gain exposure to storytelling, media relations, internal communications, and strategic messaging, while working closely with a collaborative team committed to ending hunger in San Diego County. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assist with writing and editing content for newsletters, blog posts, and webpages
- Maintain and update website content, especially the newsroom section
- Identify timely and relevant topics for the newsroom
- Follow up on story leads and coordinate interviews
- Track and record media coverage mentions, including those of competitors
- Draft internal and external communications such as emails, announcements, media pitches, and press releases
- Conduct research for campaigns, media lists, and award opportunities
- Support and maintain the editorial calendar
- Assist with compiling historical campaign data
- Organize and archive digital communications materials
- Tag and rename photos/documents, transcribe audio and video recordings
- Digitize physical assets and maintain the shared drive (S drive)
- Maintain and support the Story Bank, including backfilling with past stories
- Perform other duties as assigned
The ideal candidate is a strong writer with a passion for storytelling and an interest in nonprofit communications. They are organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. A collaborative team player, they bring creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with digital tools and Microsoft Office is helpful, and alignment with the Food Bank’s mission and values is essential. EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE
A typical way of obtaining the necessary education, training, and experience for this position includes:
- G.E.D or High School Diploma
- Minimum 0-2 years of experience
- Combination of education and experience can be considered
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of communications and marketing
- Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Familiarity with CMS platforms and digital tools is a plus
- Write clear, engaging, and compelling copy for various audiences
- Work effectively both independently and within a team
- Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Exercise sound judgment and attention to detail

- A market level competitive salary is between $19.00 - $20.00 based on experience.
- In accordance with California law, eligible employees will receive paid sick leave.
- Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 8-10 Hours per week.
- Ability to choose two days per week to fit your schedule
- Occasional overtime, late nights, or weekend shifts are required, based on business needs.
