Assistant Chief of Police

The Assistant Chief of Police is under the general direction of the Chief of Police and serves as the second-in-command who assumes full command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police. The position is on call 24/7 and directly supervises managers such as the Lieutenant(s) or Support Services Manager. The Assistant Chief assists the Chief with overseeing all operations within the department by providing leadership and goals/objectives related to, but not limited to, department policies/protocols, staff development/training, performance management, budget, projects and related benchmarks, community/media relations; coordination with campus leadership/stakeholders; and the management of critical incidents. The position periodically requires irregular work hours and includes the ability to respond 24/7 to situations in a timely manner. While the position resides within the UC Riverside campus, this position may respond to incidents at other University settings and various external venues. The full salary range for the Assistant Chief of Police is $143,000 - $285,000 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $252,000 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and confidently in a public setting that may include composing accurate detailed, concise reports, memos and correspondence with proper grammar, punctuation and spelling. Possess and demonstrate a management philosophy that is sensitive and understanding of the diversity and dynamics within the University campus and community. Demonstrated ability to properly delegate tasks and require accountability Experience with applying positive and negative reinforcement, and to praise and reward employees. Excellent problem solving ability. Excellent ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Excellent ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgment. Excellent ability to independently manage a large and complex organization with multiple priorities and limited resources. Excellent ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity. Thorough knowledge of budgeting and financial practices applicable to law enforcement in the University environment. Thorough experience performing all aspects of police officer, sergeant of police and lieutenant of police functions. Excellent knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools. Excellent ability to effectively orchestrate the ongoing deployment of multiple employees and resources. Excellent ability to supervise and train staff in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties. Ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology. Thorough knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment. Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement management theory and administrative standards. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Driver's License. Thorough knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions.
