Commercial Underwriter I Location Los Angeles, CA :

Position Summary:

The primary job function of the Commercial Underwriter I (Small Account Underwriter) is to analyze and evaluate the degree of risk for small to midsized select commercial accounts. Requires strong teamwork, collaboration, customer service and problem solving skills, and a focus on results.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluates, accepts, rejects or modifies new and renewal accounts within the established underwriting guidelines. Handles and make prompt decisions and problem solving on commercial risks.
  • Reviews and evaluates inspections, third party data, and other documents to make the necessary recommendations for risk improvement. Reviews property valuation reports, fire brush reports, motor vehicle reports, loss histories and other related underwriting reports to determine acceptability and needs to modify account.
  • Reviews and processes endorsements and cancellations within limits of authority and according to established guidelines.
  • Accompanies Marketing and meets with existing and potential agents to develop relationships and generate additional business.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues in underwriting and all support areas in order to meet the insurance needs of customers.
  • Regular attendance at work on a full-time schedule of at least 8 hours and 40 hours per week
  • Other functions may be assigned

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • AU, AINS and/or CPCU desired

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of Underwriting experience
  • 6-12 months of UW Trainee role with satisfactory performance or above
  • Or equivalent combination of education/experience

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Moderate computer skills: Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint
  • Effective communication skills and must be able to demonstrate success with managing tight time frames, high volumes of work and maintain good agency relationships
  • Ability to work efficiently in a team environment
  • Demonstrate tenacious problem solving skills and the ability to adapt to change as the company advances its strategic vision
  • Critical attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize and multi-task
