Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position requiring at least 2 years of ER experience, including pediatric ER exposure, with night shift availability and flexibility across adult and pediatric settings.
Details
- Acute care hospital emergency department setting with a high-volume adult ER (36 treatment areas) and a separate Peds ER (12 treatment areas plus 8-pod fast track area)
- Approximately 325 patient visits per day across both ERs, with roughly 30,000 pediatric visits annually
- Patient population ranges from minor walk-in complaints to critically ill adults and pediatric patients, including respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, some psych holds, STEMI, CVA, and burn receiving cases
- Patient ratios: ICU 1:2, Peds ER 1:4, Adult ER 1:4, procedural sedation 1:1
- Some nurses work exclusively in Peds ER, some exclusively in Adult ER, and some in both — all travelers must have experience with both adult and pediatric populations
- Travelers will be required to float to the Peds ER
- No floating outside of the ER department
- Fast track area staffed by midlevels (11a–1p) with LVNs and RNs working alongside; Peds ER staffed by a designated pediatric physician
- ER techs, CNAs, and a monitor tech are available; phlebotomy team handles lab draws
- Phillips telemetry monitoring in use; RT equipment including vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen available
- EMR: Cerner
- 12-hour night shifts; available shift times include 7p–7a, 3p–3a, and 11p–11a
- No block scheduling — travelers must be flexible with shift scheduling
- 4 weekend shifts required per month (can be 1 per week or 2 every other week)
- No on-call requirement; standby for low census is possible with a 30-minute response time if called in
- 18-week contract
Requirements
- Active CA RN license required; pending licenses will not be accepted
- Required certifications (all must be active, no pending accepted): BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS
- Minimum 2 years of emergency department RN experience required
- Significant pediatric ER experience required — general pediatric experience alone is not sufficient
- Experience in triage required
- Must have experience handling a high patient volume comparable to approximately 325 visits per day
- Experience with Cerner EMR
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Duo submissions are not accepted
Additional Information
- RNs manage their own ER holds, which are intermixed within the main ER; no separate psych or seclusion rooms
- In-house security is available on the unit
- Three triage nurses staff triage at the start of each day; travelers are expected to be capable of performing triage
- EKG interpretation testing is assigned during orientation; critical care RNs (ED/ICU/PICU) will complete additional testing including STEMI and procedural sedation curricula
- Navy blue scrubs required for RNs; hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweat jackets are not permitted
- Travelers are expected to work holidays unless the holiday falls during contracted time off
- Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
