Municipal Finance Consultant (12-Month Consulting Engagement)

Location: Fully Remote (Occasional Travel to Trenton, NJ)

Our client is seeking an experienced Municipal Finance Consultant to support a New Jersey municipality through a 12-month consulting engagement . This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned municipal finance professional with extensive knowledge of New Jersey municipal finance laws, budgeting, and governmental accounting to make an immediate impact while working remotely.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation and administration of the annual municipal budget.
• Support the preparation of Annual Financial Statements (AFS).
• Oversee general ledger maintenance and account reconciliations.
• Strengthen and maintain internal controls.
• Prepare financial reports for municipal leadership and governing bodies.
• Coordinate audit preparation and respond to auditor requests.
• Monitor municipal revenues and expenditures.
• Assist with financial forecasting and long-term fiscal planning.
• Ensure compliance with New Jersey municipal finance regulations and reporting requirements.
• Recommend process improvements to enhance financial operations.
• Support special finance initiatives and strategic projects.
• Present financial information during occasional Board, Council, and committee meetings.

Qualifications

• Previous finance leadership experience within a New Jersey municipality .
• Extensive knowledge of New Jersey municipal finance laws, regulations, and reporting requirements .
• Experience preparing municipal budgets and Annual Financial Statements (AFS).
• Strong background in governmental accounting, financial reporting, and audit support.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work independently in a fully remote consulting environment.
