Job Description and Duties

DTSC's Site Mitigation and Restoration Program is looking for a motivated Environmental Scientist to oversee the investigation and remediation of contaminated properties in the Greater Los Angeles area. Join a motivated team in guiding proponents and responsible parties through DTSC's investigation and remediation processes to help clean up and safely reuse properties such as dry cleaners, plating shops, and industrial facilities. As an Environmental Scientist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Review or prepare technical reports and other documents including, but not limited to: Phase I, Preliminary Endangerment Assessment/Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Facility Assessment, Site Characterization workplan and reports, Sampling and Analysis Plans, Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment, pilot and treatability studies, feasibility studies, remedy selection documents, design, implementation, completion reports, operation and maintenance plans, five-year reviews and long term monitoring reports for compliance with approved plans
  • Evaluate scientific data, site conditions, and the potential overall impact to public health and the environment and make risk management decisions that support selection of remedies and allow integration of the remedy with site development
  • Review or prepare cost estimates and coordinates with the other DTSC staff to ensure adequate financial assurance mechanisms are in place for the selected remedy and long-term operation and maintenance, and design and participate in discovery projects especially in environmental justice areas, to identify sites that pose a risk to human health and the environment
  • Research, scope, review and/or comment on proposals to utilize emerging and green technologies, including bioremediation, mycoremediation, phytoremediation, nanotechnology and life cycle assessment and management
  • Plan and manage a workload consisting of multiple assignments on projects with conflicting deadlines to ensure all assignments are completed on time and within budget
  • Prepare and maintain accurate project schedules to facilitate allocation of resources

Working Conditions

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. For more details, please click here .
