Software Engineer, Human Data
About the Team
OpenAI's Human Data Team creates custom data solutions driving groundbreaking research. Our work enhances and evaluates our flagship models and products like ChatGPT, GPT-4o, and Sora, and contributes to safety initiatives through collaboration with our Preparedness and Safety Systems teams.
As a software team directly within OpenAI's research organization, our team takes projects from initial research ideation through to execution and human data collection, ensuring seamless integration and rapid iteration. By working closely with researchers and AI trainers, we land direct impact in OpenAI's end products, and influence the frontier of model research.We work with AI trainers to gather specialized data for training and evaluating our models across modalities such as video, audio, text, and tool actions. Our goal is to develop scalable methods and tools and platforms to generate and evaluate high quality data from both synthetic sources and human experts in various fields, including mathematics, sciences, creative writing, programming, art, and safety. We leverage OpenAI models to improve and streamline our data collection and quality processes.
About the Role
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Build and optimize data pipelines for sourcing, curating, and processing human-generated data that enhances model training, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
Develop tools and infrastructure that enable scalable data collection, annotation, and quality control processes, working closely with cross-functional teams in research, product, and operations.
Collaborate with research teams across all of OpenAI to ensure the data used improves model alignment, reduces harmful outputs, and upholds safety standards.
Innovate on model evaluation techniques , leveraging human feedback and synthetic data to assess and improve the capabilities of OpenAI’s models.
Contribute to products like ChatGPT and Sora , directly impacting user experiences by ensuring models are trained with the highest-quality human data.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
3+ years of industry experience in software development.
Experience navigating ambiguous and cross functional environments
Willingness and enthusiasm for trying new approaches and technologies.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
