Status: Union, Non-exempt
Hourly Wage: $29.70
Schedule: 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday

Our programs meet the needs of people, rather than demanding that people meet the needs of our programs.
JOB SUMMARY:
Community Forward SF is hiring a Housing Navigator for our Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool for the Ending Transgender Homelessness Initiative program. The program will work with participants who are part of the trans and gender nonconforming community by providing case management, housing location and coordination services, and an ongoing housing subsidy.
Housing Navigators assist our participants with all needs related to obtaining and maintaining their housing. Housing Navigators are responsible for locating units, landlord engagement & retention, collaborating with case managers, scheduling and attending unit viewings, helping with lease signing and negotiation, ensuring timely payments of move-in funds and ongoing rent payments, and supporting participants with housing retention issues.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Establish and maintain a caseload of participants, provide housing services including, but not limited to: completing housing applications, gathering documents required for move-in, scheduling and attending unit viewings, assisting with lease signing and understanding, and supporting with move-ins.
- Provide support, education, and resource connections to assist participants in overcoming barriers to housing.
- Assist participants with utility enrollment and education on how to pay rent.
- Conduct outreach to encourage program usage, especially regarding housing placement
- Identify participant behaviors that may jeopardize their housing, and intervene when necessary to promote housing retention.
- Maintain participants' files and associated documentation.
- Provide follow-up support to housing retention incidents.
- Adhere to established policies and procedures.
- Ensure that participants are treated with dignity and respect and that their needs are met while participating in the program.
- Support our mission to promote stabilization, hope, and healing for adults experiencing homelessness in San Francisco.
- Training and meeting attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s (B.A.) degree or equivalent in education and work experience or 4 years of experience in housing-related programs or real estate
- Excellent cultural competence and humility regarding the TGNC community.
- Thorough understanding of the specific issues and barriers that members of the TGNC community face.
- Experience negotiating and working with large and small landlords
- Knowledge of San Francisco community resources and neighborhoods
- Understanding of Fair Housing laws
- Comfort with technology including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and city housing databases.
- Possess effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively.
- Ability to de-escalate conflict
- Possess a good understanding of homelessness, trauma, DV/IPV, HIV/AIDS, substance use disorder and recovery, mental health disorders and neurodiversity, harm reduction, and systems of oppression.
- Ability to engage with others in a positive, energetic, helpful, and trauma-informed manner.
- Able to work effectively with diverse individuals who self-identify by culture, language, neighborhood, sexual identity, gender, and other definitions.
- Ability to write and speak English effectively.
- CPR and first aid certification required within 90 days of hire.
- TB clearance and proof of COVID-19 vaccination within 7 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Multicultural, multilingual
- Passion for working with at-risk client populations
- Lived experience in homelessness and/or other systems of oppression
- Lived experience in the TGNC community
- Familiarity with the ONE System.
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong self-awareness, cultural humility, and commitment to personal praxis
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand and walk as needed throughout the shift for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to sit and use a computer, including keyboard and visual display terminal, for extended periods of time.
- Finger, hand, and wrist agility.
- Ability to complete tasks in an environment where interruptions are the norm and background noise is present.
- Ability to move through buildings commonly including stairs, between buildings, and out in the community.
