Under the direction of the Assistant Chief (Supervisor I), the Property Inspector Specialist (PIS) is responsible for asset management and control of assets for administrative, Business Enterprises Program (BEP), and case services asset types for approximately 1/3 of the nearly 20,000 items in approximately 500 facilities. Conduct a physical inventory of approximately 1/3 of all property recorded on the inventory database Fi$Cal on a 2-year cycle to reconcile the actual property with the inventory from the department’s inventory database of inventory records, Fi$Cal. Responsible to provide technical assistance to assigned units/facilities regarding acquisitions, transfers, surveys and other actions related to asset management.

Working Conditions

The majority of the work will take place in one of the following locations with consumers, the public, colleagues, and other stakeholders: a DOR open office setting in a cubicle environment, offsite in the community, at events and various partner locations, and/or at an approved alternate work location. The incumbent must have the ability to work in an office setting for up to 40 hours per week and remain at a workstation for extended periods while utilizing a personal computer, peripherals, and other office equipment with or without accommodation. The incumbent will be working in an office setting with both natural and artificial lighting. Strong interpersonal skills are required to interact effectively with consumers, the public, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

Special Requirements: The incumbent is required to have the ability to travel statewide on an as needed basis, including by vehicle or air travel, up to 50% of the time. Must undergo a background check through the Department of Corrections and be granted access into the California State Prisons.

Property Inspector (Specialist) Exam

All applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications responding to the following three (3) numbered questions. SOQ must adhere to the following requirements:

• Maximum of 2 pages
Single-spaced
12-point Arial font
• Clearly number each response corresponding to the question
• Responses should reflect your experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to the duties of the Property Inspector Specialist position. The SOQ will demonstrate your ability to communicate in writing

  1. Please describe a situation when you had to investigate discrepancies in inventory. What was the situation? What were the actions? What was the outcome?
  2. Please describe your experience with record keeping, the maintenance of property accounts, and records of location of property.
  3. Provide an example of a time when you delivered technical assistance or training related to asset management, inventory procedures, or compliance requirements. In your response, describe the audience, the issue or need, the guidance or training you provided, and how your actions contributed to improved accuracy, understanding, or process efficiency.

The ability to work with teams to improve systems and/or processes. Provide excellent customer service, effectively plan, organize, and monitor work assignments to meet deadlines, customer expectations and needs. Knowledge of warehousing, asset/inventory management practices.
