The Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is a nationally recognized academic department dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education. As one of the fastest-growing clinical departments within the School of Medicine, Dermatology provides comprehensive care across multiple clinical sites throughout Orange County and serves as a regional referral center for complex dermatologic conditions.
The department supports a diverse portfolio of activities, including a robust clinical enterprise, nationally recognized residency and fellowship training programs, and an expanding research program supported by federal, foundation, and industry funding. Faculty are leaders in medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, skin cancer, inflammatory skin diseases, regenerative medicine, and women's skin health.

Responsibilities:

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet those goals. Responsible for supervising the day-to-day unit activities. Normally directs a section or group of budget / financial / resources analysts. Oversees and participates in the most complex projects and deals directly with major department managers. Provides direction according to established policies and management guidanceeceives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Manages, prepares, administers, and directs control of budget / organization resources. Manages the activities of the financial / resource analyst staff. Reviews and approves recommendations for financial planning and control. Monitors division and department adherence to approved budget. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Work is reviewed and measured based on meeting objectives and schedules. Follows processes and operational policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, budgeting and reporting techniques, accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Solid understanding of financial and resource planning concepts as well as how to control organizational budgeting.
  • Advanced skills in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels.
  • Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of others accordingly. Ability to multi-task.
  • Client services oriented; has good listening, communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of finance and accounting policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to extract, verify, compile, and analyze financial information from multiple sources to complete work assignments.
  • Advanced ability to effectively present complex accounting and finance related information verbally and in writing.
  • Advance experience using financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and unique regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of common desktop / web applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of analytical procedures used in accounting project of complex scope.
  • Understanding of the interrelationship between procedures and desired results.
  • In depth ability to use multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to gather information for specialized, complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. In depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, and/or Financial Reporting; Including 2-3 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.


Preferred:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Experience with financial dashboards or reporting tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI).
  • Experience working in an academic medical setting.
  • Clinical practice financial experience and be able to oversee complex accounting systems.
  • Professional certification
