Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of a Caltrans Area Superintendent, the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor coordinates and assigns the work of employees engaged in the bridge maintenance of bridge structures on State Highways. The incumbent enforces safety and health policies and procedures as contained in the Department's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), applies knowledge of environmental laws and storm water Best Management Practices (BMP’s), accident prevention techniques, principals of effective supervision and safe work practices. The incumbent may assist in work relating to the maintenance of bridge structures involving work at heights over 200 feet.

Working Conditions

Position located in Los Angeles County - Special Crews.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

This position is based at a Maintenance Station in a climate-controlled environment under artificial lights, many duties will be spent outdoors. Weather conditions vary from a cold windy and wet winter climate to a very hot and dry summer climate. May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, hot materials, chemicals, loud noises, inclement weather, steep, uneven, and/or unstable terrain, fast moving traffic, and/or extreme temperatures. May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time. May be exposed to or put in stressful situations. Will be required to wear long pants and appropriate footwear in good condition, and must wear the provided personal protective safety equipment including but not limited to: shirts or vests, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, face shields, respirators, ear plugs, as well as other safety devices deemed necessary. The incumbent will be required to travel extensively throughout the assigned area and may be required to travel and work in other areas in the District.

The incumbent may be required to work overtime, irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends, shift changes due to operational needs, and may be loaned to other crews. May be scheduled to work the night shift as needed to meet operational needs.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

• The position requires a valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

• Possession of a valid and unrestricted Class A or Class B commercial driver license with P (Passenger/Bus), H (Hazardous Materials), and N (Tank Vehicle) endorsements.
• Possession of a qualified applicator certificate (QAC) for pesticides issued by CAL-EPA.
