Mendota Wildlife Area - Fish and Wildlife Technician
Job Description and Duties
Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team helping to manage seasonal wetland and upland habitats for a variety of wildlife on the 12,000 acre Mendota Wildlife Area? Under the supervision of the Sr. Environmental Scientist Supervisor, the Fish and Wildlife Technician will assist with the management and maintenance of wildlife habitat, including wetlands and upland food crops for wildlife, and controlling invasive weeds. Act as lead person for seasonal employees in performing maintenance activities for the public use programs, including operation of a hunter check station. Assist with purchasing and procurement requirements needed for wildlife area operation. Operate and maintain vehicles and various tractors and farming implements. Perform tasks for maintaining buildings and facilities on the wildlife area. The incumbent will also be required to write reports and maintain accurate records on herbicide use, water quality monitoring, and hunt results.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions
Work may require working outdoors during adverse weather such as rain, cold and heat; walking or wading on uneven and muddy terrain. Ability to work outside in extreme temperatures, walk or wade on uneven and muddy terrain, deal with mosquitoes, ticks and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife. Involves sitting some of the time but may involve walking or standing for extended periods at a counter area when receiving the public at hunter check stations. This position may require working weekends, holidays, non-traditional hours and outdoors during adverse weather. Work activities may include wading, hiking in hilly terrain, repetitive lifting and other physically challenging duties. Telework will not be available. State-owned housing is not available at this time. A Pesticide Qualified Applicators Certificate is required for this position. This certificate must be maintained during the course of employment.
Special Requirements
Demonstrate knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation and repair and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State; willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willingness to perform varied manual tasks; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; willingness to wear a prescribed uniform.
