Job Description and Duties

The Department Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region Inland Fisheries and Wild Trout unit has an opening for a Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid based out of the Honey Lake Wildlife Area office, in Wendel, California. The incumbent will assist the Lassen/Modoc Environmental Scientist with variety of fisheries related studies to manage fisheries in this region, including Eagle Lake. This position will provide a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and hands on experience in a variety of fisheries monitoring and sampling techniques. The incumbent will also have opportunities to work on restoration projects to restore sensitive trout populations and their habitats.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team in a position that provides development of expertise in fisheries science and management, survey and study design, implementing, and monitoring habitat restoration projects, data management/analysis, and scientific writing.

The incumbent can expect to assist with boat and backpack electrofishing, snorkel surveys, netting, hook and line, spawning/redd surveys, fish marking and tagging, habitat typing, genetic tissue sampling, angler creel, and public engagement.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

Field work occurs in cold water streams, lakes and rivers during potentially inclement weather and remote locations. Field data collection can last 10 hours or more on a given day. Sampling gear preparation and maintenance will take place in a shop/warehouse environment. Office work may include sitting and standing at a computer workstation for portions of each day. Wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting field work, and during site visits. Ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle, boat, tow and back-up a trailer, is preferred. Travel may be required, including multiple day trips requiring camping or backpacking.

Special Requirements

Special Physical Characteristics: Physical strength and agility to hike off trail on uneven terrain; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes; and ability to lift and carry 40 pounds over rugged terrain for extended periods. Ability to adapt to changing conditions and tasks.

Knowledge/experience with cold and warm-water fish species; knowledge/experience with fisheries management and fish, water, and habitat sampling techniques.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to conduct work with minimal supervision; able to lead day-to-day activities; strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work as part of a diverse team; effective communication skills with a team and the public; high degree of personal initiative, environmental and work ethic and team orientation. Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems. Strives to listen to others and understand their interests, and maintains effective working relationships with other staff, managers, members of the public, key agency personnel.
