Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervisor of Building Trades, the Plumber II duties include, but are not limited to, installing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing standard plumbing equipment used in water, gas, oil sewage, fire, steam and refrigeration systems, including appliances; ensuring that safety rules are followed; preparing list of plumbing supplies and equipment; maintaining security of working areas, work materials; inspecting premises and searching incarcerated persons. Maintain a safety consciousness and awareness with specific attention to factors such as phone numbers to dial in emergency situations, familiarize yourself with alternate measures of summoning aid when the telephone is not available, know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher at locations where you spend most of your time, correct or report any safety hazards that you observe and use common sense in resolving safety problems, and know the location of the nearest breakaway gurney.

This is a 12 month Limited Term position that may be extended to 24 months, with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in plumbing; Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety applicable to plumbing; and building codes.

Skill in: Performing plumbing work and in caring for tools, materials and equipment.

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; read blueprints and work from and interpret plans and specifications; keep records and make simple reports; prepare rough sketches of minor plumbing installations; and make estimates of material and labor costs for minor plumbing jobs.

Ability to: All of the above, and instruct, direct, and coordinate the work of a small crew; follow oral and written instructions.
