FIELD REPRESENTATIVE
Job Description and Duties
Have you imagined yourself in a role where you can serve the people of California through education, regulation and enforcement actions regarding the manufacturer, sale, ownership, safety training, and transfer of firearms? Does a role that includes conducting statewide training and providing information to licensed firearm dealers interest you? If so, we hope you consider applying for a Field Representative position within our Bureau of Firearms.
Among other things, a Field Representative in our Regulatory Compliance Unit will perform the following tasks:
- Independently plans, schedules, conducts statewide inspections of California licensed firearm dealers to ensure compliance with state firearm laws and regulations.
- Communicates with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives investigators regarding inspection findings or referrals.
- Provides training to various stakeholders regarding reporting, California firearm laws and regulations, and other firearm related responsibilities.
- Conducts inspections of licensed firearm dealers, ammunition vendors, manufacturers, and gun show producers to verify compliance with state gun show, firearm, and ammunition laws and regulations.
Candidates interested in taking on this challenge should have:
A willingness to travel via airplane and/or automobile for up to two weeks per month and occasionally work odd shifts such as evenings, weekends, and nights.

Working Conditions
DOJ has adopted telework for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. After an initial training period, this position may allow for some telework opportunities. All telework schedules are based on current conditions and may be re evaluated as conditions change.
An alternate work week schedule of 4-10-40 may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- The ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with firearms dealers, manufacturers, law enforcement agencies, and other reporting entities.
- The ability to independently perform field liaison work.
- The ability to speak effectively before groups of all sizes.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, diplomacy in dealing with law enforcement agencies and the public.
- A familiarity with Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, Word and PowerPoint software programs.
Special Personal Characteristics: Demonstrated ability to act independently; flexibly; tact, excellent organization, maintain effective work habits, a verifiable record of dependability; and excellent public speaking skills are essential to be successful in this position.

Statement of Qualifications
A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. To be considered for this position, applicants must submit an SOQ along with their application. The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. SOQs must be no more than two (2) pages in length, and typed using no less than 12 point Arial font. The SOQ response must address the following questions, in the order listed below:
- Describe your experience interpreting and/or enforcing statute and regulations.
- Describe an instance when you were working on a joint/team project and your partner/team disagreed with you or with the other team members. What steps did you take to resolve the disagreement? What was the outcome?
- Describe your experience auditing, conducting inspections, and/or working with the public.
When completing the SOQ, do not provide a single, narrative response. Each question above must be addressed one at a time (i.e., first provide a complete and independent response to Question #1, then a complete and independent response to Question #2, etc.) for consideration. Additionally, each response must be numbered and include the full text of the question being answered prior to each individual response to clearly indicate which question you are responding to.
Write your responses carefully. Initial evaluation of each applicant will be based on the content of the answers and written communication skills demonstrated on their submitted. Content of the SOQ should be your own work. Clear indication of SOQs written by anyone other than the applicant may be disqualified.
Resumes do not take the place of the Statement of Qualifications. Applicants who fail to follow these requirements or who do not provide responses to the specific questions in the order listed will be disqualified from the selection process.
