Job Description and Duties

Under the direct supervision of the District Director, the Conservationist Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the Conservationist staff and Corpsmembers assigned to the Center. Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and direction on the proper implementation of CCC policies and procedures, as well as the safety of staff and Corpsmembers. Ensure all federal, state, departmental and district regulations are being followed.

Develop, monitor, and manage public service conservation work and special program activities. Estimate projects and negotiate agreements and contracts with funding sources in the surrounding communities. Work with the budget staff to balance expenditures with income, provide monthly reports, and bill projects. Develop an annual reimbursement target and review projects to ensure quality control.

Monitor and oversee Corpsmember discipline, evaluations, separations, COMET, Corpsmember development, safety program, and facility maintenance and inspections. Ensure all Conservationist staff effectively and safely perform their responsibilities and duties through appropriate training and instruction. Complete Individual Development Plans and Individual Training Plans annually for staff.

Participate in staff and community meetings providing input and information relative to the program. Develop confidence and cooperation with project sponsors and maintain relationships with sponsors and the community. Promote CCC through contact with the media, presentations before civic groups, governing bodies, and in educational settings. Assist with community resource development such as donations, projects, volunteers, job placement, and partnerships.

Coordinate emergency response. Ensure that Conservationist staff and Corpsmembers can respond to emergencies effectively and efficiently by ensuring that all PSCW crews are properly organized, trained and equipped. May act as liaison or agency representative on emergency operations.

Working Conditions

The reporting location for this position is at 4411 CA-193, Greenwood, CA 95635, USA

This is a full-time, salaried position based in Greenwood, California. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though schedules may vary based on program needs. As part of a statewide emergency response organization, this role requires flexibility and availability outside of regular business hours. The Conservationist Supervisor must be prepared to respond to calls and support field operations during evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

Special Requirements

Class C Commercial License – Provide evidence that a Class C Commercial license with a Passenger Transport Vehicle special endorsement has been obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Pre-employment Drug Test – In accordance with the Federal Highway Administration regulations (49 CFR, Part 382), persons hired to a class requiring a commercial driver license must take and pass a pre-employment drug test.

Background Investigation – Undergo fingerprinting and successfully pass a Criminal Offender Record Information check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which may or may not also include a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Medical Exam - A medical clearance exam is required for this classification.

The ideal candidate for this position brings a blend of hands-on conservation experience and dynamic leadership skills. They have a strong foundation in project planning and implementation, particularly in areas that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote environmental resilience—such as trail construction, native plant restoration, water conservation, and energy efficiency retrofits. Prior experience in managing public service or conservation crews is a plus, along with a working knowledge of safety protocols, quality control, and field operations.

They should be comfortable navigating both boots-in-the-dirt environments and professional stakeholder engagement. The role calls for someone who can mentor and motivate corpsmembers and staff while fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and inclusion. Effective communication, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to coordinate with public and private partners are key. Experience with grant or contract management, workforce development, and emergency response preparation will also serve this leader well.

  2. Transfer Eligibility – Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).
  3. Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above.
  4. Training & Development (T&D) Assignment – State employees in a permanent appointment, and no longer on probation, may be considered for a T&D assignment.
