Job Description and Duties

Under general direction of a Supervisor II, the Supervisor I will provide direct supervision of staff in the Northern California Inspections Unit. This unit conducts anonymous and unannounced recycling center, dealer, and other site inspections throughout Northern California. Travel throughout California should not exceed 40% and may include extended overnight stays. Weekend assignments may be required and work schedules for this position may be altered occasionally for program management needs.

The Supervisor I is required to work independently, communicate effectively, manage multiple tasks and be proficient in supervising remote field staff. Daily proficient utilization of office equipment and the Microsoft Office Suite is required. Some of these duties will require in-person presence.

Plan, organize and supervise a team of inspectors working throughout Northern California to ensure inspections are in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, division and departmental policies and procedures. Review inspections reports for completeness, accuracy, and organization. Assist Supervisor II in developing policy and business practice needs to develop recommended legislative concepts, budget proposals, regulation packages, and/or provide analysis. Update and/or develop policies and procedures; establish, document, and maintain uniform processes and procedures.

Beginning July 1, 2026, CalRecycle staff will be office centered, requiring employees to report to the office at least four days per week. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program needs. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the positions designated headquarter location, as reflected on the duty statement and at their own expense.

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience conducting inspections/enforcing statue/regulations.
  • Proficiency, training and experience in Microsoft Office or comparable software.
  • Experienced in implementing new program/policies or procedures.
  • Experience as a supervisor or lead.
  • Experience in customer relations/service via in person, phone and/or email.
  • Demonstrates excellent written communication skills.
