Mock Trial Instructor Summer Camp 2026

Education Unlimited
California

Education Unlimited® provides academic summer camps & pre-college summer programs for students entering grades 4-12. Our summer programs include public speaking camps, college admissions prep programs, science camps, summer acting camp, writing camps, computer camp, leadership camp, video production camp, and college tours.

OPEN POSITIONS:

Two position types are available:

  1. Online Instructors -  Online instructors will lead classes via zoom and google classroom with cohorts of approximately 12 students.  All curriculum materials will be provided, but instructors will need to have a reliable computer and internet connection and a quiet and professional place from which to host class.
  2. On Campus Instructors -  On-campus positions are available at Stanford, UCLA and UC Berkeley.  These are residential positions and teachers will be provided with housing in the university residence halls.  Some limited commuter positions may also be available for local instructors.

Camp Dates:  Camp sessions are each one week in length and run from June 10 to August 5.  Instructors may be hired for one or more weeks.  Please indicate which weeks you are available to work on the application.

Course Description:

Mock Trial participants will work with a lead instructor (typically a practicing attorney or an instructor with personal experience and expertise in competitive mock trial) to learn the structure of the court systems, differences between the process of law involved in civil and criminal trials, and most importantly proper methods of the formation and presentation of convincing legal arguments. As part of this learning process, students will be directly exposed to the basics of certain substantive areas of law, including constitutional, criminal and tort law, as well as rules of evidence.

Past activities for the high school mock trial have included a visit to a courthouse for a first-hand look at the American justice system at work, participation in simulated client interviews, and/or professionally critiqued oral arguments. The weeklong session includes at least two mock trials, including opening statements, the examination of witnesses and introduction of evidence and closing arguments. Guest speakers such as area attorneys or judges have been regular features of recent mock trial sessions. Students will build toward a full-length mock trial exhibition at week's end. Instructors are chosen for their ability to connect with and enthuse this age group. This program is campus-based for an immersive learning experience.

Job Description:

This is a temporary summer camp position. The Mock Trial Instructor is responsible for guiding high school and/or middle school students through Education Unlimited’s mock trial curriculum. Instructors teach daily seminars and workshops, and should be natural leaders and enthusiastic about working with young people. Instructors should be prepared to give small lectures throughout the week, and also manage and prep students for trial. Instructors will also be responsible for tracking student work and handing in any deliverables to the camp director and EU home office.

In the past, instructors have been working or former attorneys with mock trial experience. This is a unique program that focuses on creating future lawyers, and the best candidates are passionate about the law, teaching, leadership, and communication.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience teaching, leading, coaching, or participating in mock trial.
  • A practicing attorney, former practicing attorney, or legal expert
  • Proven ability to lead small or large groups.
  • A calm and professional demeanor.
  • The willingness and ability to work long hours.
  • Self-motivation and follow-through.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong people skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • A passion for education.

Additional Requirements for On campus Instructors:

In addition to teaching responsibilities, instructors should be available and willing to assist the camp director with active supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative tasks. Instructors should be mature, reliable, and able to work well with fellow staffers. Instructors are also expected to act as mentors, and will help lead field trips and guide students on excursions. With the support of the entire staff, instructors are responsible for the health and safety of students, in addition to fulfilling instructional objectives.

This is a residential position — room, board, and parking on campus is provided for the duration of the program. We will also consider instructors who wish to commute daily but preference is given for those candidates who are willing to live on campus and assist with dorm supervision. Instructors may be hired for one session or for multiple sessions of this program. Please indicate your availability on your application.

Additional Requirements for Online Instructors:

Online instructors need to have access to a reliable computer and reliable internet connection.  They should have a strong working knowledge of how to use Zoom and Google Classroom.  Refresher training will be provided.
