Job Description and Duties

The reporting location for the Supervisor I position is at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) Headquarters Office located in Auburn, CA. Working under general direction in the Department’s Policy & Outreach Division, the Supervisor I acts as the program lead over implementation of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy’s capacity building and tribal engagement work. The Supervisor I manages the SNC’s Capacity Program which provides funding and technical assistance to build organizational capacity of regional partners. The Supervisor I also acts as the SNC’s Tribal Liaison, acting as an advisor to the Executive Team on tribal engagement and consultation, developing and leading SNC’s tribal outreach efforts, and coordinating with other state agencies on tribal engagement and consultation policies. The Supervisor I manages the work of a creative team responsible for providing technical assistance, managing grants, and designing programs that build the organizational and community capacity of partners implementing natural resource conservation, restoration, and community economic development projects. The position requires flexible work hours and occasional travel throughout the 25-million-acre Sierra Nevada Region (Approximately 25 percent of the time).

Working Conditions

While this position is headquartered at the Auburn office, it is currently eligible for up to 60% telework. In accordance with Government Code 14200, telework eligibility requires California residency and may not be used to live or relocate out of state. Telework arrangements are subject to change based on executive orders or operational needs. The incumbent may be required to report to the Auburn office at the discretion of SNC.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of the communities and natural resources of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountains, including groups working to improve the landscape
  • Strong background working with California Native American tribes or in tribal relations
  • Knowledge of tribal engagement best practices and California tribal consultation policy
  • Ability to collaborate; working with community groups, public land managers, local governments, tribes, resource conservation districts, and non-profits
  • Ability to manage diverse teams, develop creative strategies, and provide guidance with variable workloads and changing priorities, including to high-level subject matter experts
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing high-impact grant programs and/or technical assistance programs
  • Experience managing large government grants and/or grant programs
  • Knowledge of organizational or community capacity, collaboration, and partnership development techniques or strategies
  • Project planning and project management experience
  • Enthusiasm, resourcefulness, and a sense of humor
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing with partners, grantees, executives, and peers
  • Knowledge and interest in the principles and practices of natural resource conservation and restoration
  • Good situational awareness and a desire to make connections or work collaboratively with other teams
