VP of Estimating
A premier landscape and pool construction firm is seeking an experienced VP of Estimating to lead a high-performing estimating team through a period of strategic growth. This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for a construction professional with a deep background in high-end estimating and a passion for collaboration, process improvement, and delivering excellence. Role Overview
The VP of Estimating will oversee all estimating functions and lead a team responsible for preparing accurate, competitive bids on complex landscape and pool construction projects. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations, this individual will collaborate closely with architects, general contractors, and internal project teams to align cost strategy with design intent, project feasibility, and business growth goals. This leader will play a critical role in process development, training, and market competitiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor a team of 4–6 estimators to build a scalable, high-performing department.
- Develop and implement tools, templates, and standards to promote efficiency and quality.
- Identify and coach future leaders; foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Estimating & Cost Strategy
- Interpret plans, specs, and bid documents to generate detailed, accurate, and timely estimates.
- Maintain and improve internal cost databases, subcontractor pricing, and risk analysis tools.
- Drive bid/no-bid decisions and contribute to strategic project selection.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Project Managers and Operations teams to ensure seamless handoff from estimating to execution.
- Engage with architects and general contractors to clarify scope, provide constructability solutions, and refine pricing assumptions.
Process Improvement & Strategic Growth
- Continuously evaluate and refine estimating workflows to improve speed, accuracy, and win rates.
- Provide cost insights and margin data to support executive decision-making and long-term planning.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in high-end landscape or pool construction estimating.
- Deep understanding of construction materials, methods, and subcontractor pricing.
- Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and implement systems and tools.
- Strong communication skills and collaborative working style with architects and GCs.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with estimating software is preferred.
