Construction Resident Engineer
Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, Construction Manager, the incumbent functions as Construction Resident Engineer to administer the Construction Program within an area or corridor. The Construction Resident Engineer acts as a first line supervisor to have charge of varied and difficult transportation engineering work in the field or office involving the supervision of engineers and others engaged in transportation development activities. The incumbent administers major and minor construction projects ensuring contract compliance and acts within the authority of the State Contract Act, the "Engineer's Authority" of the Standard Specifications, the Caltrans Construction Manual, and any other applicable administrative instructions. Projects may vary from one million to billions of dollars.

Working Conditions
Position located at 2417 Mariner Square Dr., #247, Alameda, CA, Alameda County
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.While at their base of operation, employee will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Employee may also be required to travel and work outdoors and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and/or extreme heat or cold. Overtime and night work may be required, and vacation may be restricted during peak times of the construction project. Employee may also be transferred to work at another construction field office or may be reassigned to work for another Supervising TE and/or a different project due to operational needs.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.
The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of each applicant's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing.
