Job Summary:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting and supporting compliance with complex funding streams, particularly New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC). This role plays a key part in tracking incurred construction costs, forecasting upcoming expenditures, and preparing draw requests to ensure timely access to NMTC funding in alignment with project construction timelines. The Senior Accountant will also supervise one to two entry-level accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and quality review.

Salary: $68,640 - $85,000 per year

Report to: Director of Finance and Operations

Key Responsibilities:

1. General Accounting and Financial Reporting

• Reconcile general ledger accounts and ensure transactions are properly recorded.
• Process journal entries, accruals, and allocations.
• Support the monthly close process.
• Prepare monthly and year-end financial reports in accordance with GAAP.

2. Audit and Compliance Support

• Assist in annual audits and funding agency reviews.
• Ensure proper documentation and internal controls are followed.
• Maintain compliance with GAAP and funder-specific requirements.

3. Construction & Project Cost Monitoring

• Track and reconcile construction expenditures.
• Ensure proper accounting treatment for construction and capitalized costs.
• Monitor budget-to-actuals and flag variances for timely resolution.

4. NMTC Reporting and Draw Management

• Lead NMTC-related financial tracking and reporting.
• Prepare detailed incurred cost reports for NMTC projects.
• Coordinate and submit timely draw requests to ensure adequate funding is available in alignment with project construction schedules.
• Maintain organized documentation and audit-ready records for all NMTC activity.

5. Accounts Payable Oversight

• Supervise full-cycle accounts payable processing, including invoice review, coding, approval routing, and payment scheduling.
• Monitor and reconcile credit card transactions and ensure timely documentation.
• Ensure AP transactions are recorded accurately and in compliance with internal policies and grant requirements.
• Identify opportunities for improving AP efficiency and internal controls.

6. Staff Supervision and Training

• Supervise AP Account
• Provide training, mentorship, and ongoing support to ensure accurate and timely data entry, reconciliations, and reporting.
• Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and other work prepared by junior staff.
• Support professional development and help build team capacity.

7. Other Duties

• Assist with grant reporting and restricted fund tracking as needed.
• Participate in improving accounting systems and workflows.
• Other duties as assigned to meet organizational requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit or project-based environments.
• Prior supervisory or team leader experience is a plus.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting.
• Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, FE NXT).
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Clear and professional written and verbal communication.
