Working Hours

The Phlebotomist will normally work Monday through Friday, 6:00 am – 4:00, six (6) hours per day, five (5) days per week, with a 30-minute lunch break. The Phlebotomist will not work more than 32 hours a week.

Summary of Duties

The Phlebotomist will provide Phlebotomy Services for the prison population at the Metropolitan Detention Center-Los Angeles, Bureau of Prisons. This includes, but is not limited to, the collection of blood and urine samples, the preparation and tracking of all laboratory samples, the biological specimen preparation and packaging for shipment, and the maintenance of laboratory logs and other records as necessary to comply with Clinical Laboratory Inspection Amendment (CLIA) guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Individual must have graduated from an accredited school or program and be a Certified Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician or qualified Medical Assistant.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience.
  • Experience with specimen collection, packaging, and shipment to referral laboratories, with knowledge of maintaining appropriate records, must be shown on the resume.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Attire

The Phlebotomist must always wear appropriate professional attire suitable for the work environment. Uniform will consist of Navy, Royal, or Ceil Blue scrubs, which may be worn with the approval of MDC-Los Angeles. The Phlebotomist is prohibited from wearing khaki, green, or yellow clothing of any type, as this is the color of clothing the Adults in Custody (AIC) Population wears.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all blood draws, specimen collection for urine, stools, or any other laboratory diagnostic tests (including culture/sensitivity, specimen of Pap smears, histopath), required by the clinical staff under the direction of the Clinical Director in the treatment plan of the inmate patient.
  • Screening female patients for pregnancy, if clinical staff were not able to collect a urine specimen during intake screening(to use the urine HCG test or the serum HCG test).
  • Performing dipstick urine analysis, guiac test (blood in stools).
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment through inspection prior to use, cleaning (wiping) after each patient's use, and reporting defective equipment to the Health Service Administrator or Assistant Health Services Administrator.
  • Performing quality assurance on a scheduled basis, maintaining proper infection control procedures, and ensuring infectious waste is disposed of properly.
  • Prepare and properly place specimens in containers/boxes prior to pick up by local lab courier or mailing to the mainland (Rochester Lab or Texas VA). He/she will also be responsible for notifying and making sure that specimens are picked up by the lab courier
  • Assists in the filing of official laboratory reports after review (initialed and dated) by the physician.
  • Assists in the filing of official laboratory requests/procedures done, including the names of patients, registration numbers, the current date samples/specimens were taken, the date sent, and the date lab results were received.
  • Documentation on a separate logbook for laboratory requests considered sensitive and requiring confidentiality. Collection of blood and urine samples, preparation, and tracking of all laboratory samples.
