Overview

The Assistant Vice President, BUAD serves as a subject matter expert in one or more areas of underwriting, providing independent support across a broad range of financial and analytical tasks. This role is responsible for preparing budgets, negotiating renewals, analyzing utilization data, and supporting marketing efforts, while fostering strong relationships with carrier partners and internal stakeholders.

Keenan specializes in providing consulting services in the areas of: employee benefits, workers' compensation, loss control, financial, and property & liability.

How you'll make an impact

  • Act as a subject matter expert in designated underwriting areas.
  • Independently manage financial and underwriting tasks, including:
  • Preparing self-funded budgets for medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision plans.
  • Presenting budget analyses to clients and stakeholders.
  • Negotiate complex renewals and funding strategies directly with insurance carriers and vendors.
  • Reviewing monthly experience reports for accuracy and resolving anomalies with consultants.
  • Analyzing utilization reports to identify key metrics and trends; delivering insights to clients.
  • Utilizing internal actuarial tools (e.g., plan value calculations, IBNRs, feasibility studies).
  • Supporting marketing efforts through RFP responses, financial/network analysis, and finalist presentations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with carrier partners; serve as BUAD lead in issue resolution.
  • Apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving in complex or escalated situations.
  • Collaborate with Practice Leaders and senior leadership in managing block carrier relationships (e.g., JPAs, dental/vision pools).
  • Mentor junior team members and provide underwriting training.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with account management, consultants, and clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
About You

Required: Bachelor's degree with 6+ years client service and/or claims management experience -OR- High School degree/GED with 11+ years client service and/or claims management experience. 4+ years supervisory experience. Appropriate licensing as required.

  • Strong knowledge of self-funded and fully insured underwriting principles, healthcare trends, and actuarial methodologies
  • Effective analytical, math and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, strong decision-making ability, confidence to make difficult decisions and excellent communication skill
  • Must be organized, detail oriented and able to translate big picture ideas into client objectives
  • Must be a goal-oriented self-starter
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work
  • Demonstrates ability to provide superior customer service and maintain positive relationships with client contacts
  • Aptitude for learning internal systems, applications and internal workflow of the department
  • Must be able to effectively interact and deal with people at all levels inside and outside of the company
Compensation and benefits

We offer a competitive and comprehensive compensation package. The base salary range represents the anticipated low end and high end of the range for this position. The actual compensation will be influenced by a wide range of factors including, but not limited to previous experience, education, pay market/geography, complexity or scope, specialized skill set, lines of business/practice area, supply/demand, and scheduled hours.
