Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.


Under the general direction of the Bureau Chief, the Agriculture Program Supervisor I (APSI) is responsible for the overall administration of the Bureau and enforcement of the Hide and Brand Law in a specified geographic region of the state.


The APSI must have a working knowledge of the cattle industry’s principles, practices and methods and have the ability to apply this knowledge to their roles and responsibilities. Incumbent must establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; work well under pressure; make appropriate decisions and well thought out recommendations; work independently in completing assigned work; and meet required deadlines.


Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:

Organize, plan, direct, supervise, and monitor brand inspection and investigation activities of the Bureau in the assigned region

  • Coordinate program activities and act as liaison with industry, local law enforcement, and court personnel
  • Perform supervisory duties including recruitment, selection, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary action for Brand Inspectors and field staff. Review staff leave requests

Working Conditions

The duties of this position are performed indoors and outdoors. The Agriculture Program Supervisor’s primary work area is located outdoors in livestock markets, feedlots, slaughter plants and ranches. The incumbent may occasionally work under difficult conditions and be exposed to extremes in temperature, high levels of noise, heavy machinery, and various odors.

Indoor activities may include:

  • Working in livestock facilities at various locations including Saleyards and feedlots.

  • Operating a computer with various software programs, including e-mail and word processing

  • Entering data in a computer database

  • Operating a telephone, fax, calculator, and copier

  • Operating various filing drawers and bins

  • Processing reports and handle paperwork

  • Testifying in a court of law

Outdoor activities may include:

  • Inspecting livestock at farms, ranches, and saleyards or other livestock facilities

  • Travel in muddy and/or rocky terrain

  • Frequent travel by private vehicle or assigned State vehicle or other modes of transportation to various locations in the district

  • Occasional travel to other areas of California for assignments, exercises, or meetings

Department Information

The Mission of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is to safeguard a resilient food system and promote an equitable marketplace, cultivating a California grown food supply that is globally recognized for innovation, quality, and sustainability.


Through ongoing inspection and investigative services, the Bureau of Livestock Identification (Bureau) protects cattle owners in California against loss of animals by theft, straying or misappropriation. The Bureaus program consists of registration of livestock brands; inspection of cattle for lawful possession prior to transportation, sale, or slaughter, and recording of the information obtained by such inspections; and assisting local law enforcement with investigations and prosecutions involving cattle theft. These activities are financed, in its entirety, through brand registration and inspection fees paid by the livestock owners.

Special Requirements

This position requires the incumbent to pass a Medical Evaluation, a valid California Driver License, maintaining a good driving record, and a willingness to work long and irregular hours, including holidays, in all weather conditions
