Human Resources Generalist
Job Summary
A mission-driven nonprofit organization in Sacramento is seeking a Human Resources Generalist for a temp-to-hire opportunity supporting a collaborative team focused on health equity, inclusion, and employee service. This role is ideal for an HR professional with strong hands-on expertise in California leave administration, ADA accommodations, benefits support, and employee guidance. The Human Resources Generalist will serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers, balancing technical accuracy with a thoughtful, people-centered approach. Key Responsibilities - Manage leave of absence programs, including FMLA, CFRA, ADA accommodations, pregnancy disability leave, military leave, and related job protection considerations.- Provide clear, compassionate guidance to employees and managers regarding leave eligibility, documentation, timelines, benefits impact, and return-to-work processes.
- Support benefits administration, including employer-sponsored benefit programs, employee questions, and annual open enrollment coordination.
- Assist with workers’ compensation claims administration, health and safety processes, and related documentation.
- Provide general HR support across employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, HRIS updates, and employee recordkeeping.
- Partner with HR leadership and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate, compliant, and service-oriented HR support. Compensation and Benefits - Temp range: $35.00 to $40.00 per hour.
- Temp-to-hire opportunity with strong potential to convert to a regular role based on funding and performance.
- Hybrid schedule in Sacramento, CA, with in-office work Tuesday through Thursday and remote work Monday and Friday.
- Once hired permanently, compensation range is $74,400 to $85,000.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Manage complex leave of absence cases with a strong working knowledge of California leave laws and real-world application.- Evaluate employee leave scenarios involving maternity leave, medical procedures, ADA accommodations, eligibility, documentation, and job protection.
- Support benefits administration, workers’ compensation, employee relations, onboarding, and offboarding as needed.
- Maintain accurate HR documentation, timelines, employee communications, and compliance-related records. - 4 to 6 years of progressive Human Resources experience, with strong experience in California leave administration.
- Solid applied knowledge of FMLA, CFRA, ADA accommodations, pregnancy-related leave, military leave, and related compliance requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Proficiency with HRIS systems, Microsoft Office, and applicant tracking systems.
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, follow-through, and documentation practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain sensitive HR topics clearly and empathetically.
- Ability to handle confidential information with sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
- Collaborative, service-oriented mindset with the ability to support diverse employees, managers, and internal partners.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and advancing mission-driven organizational values. Preferred Qualifications - Experience working in a nonprofit, mission-driven, health equity, public health, advocacy, or charitable organization.
- Prior experience supporting annual open enrollment and employee benefits communication.
- Experience assisting with workers’ compensation claims, return-to-work coordination, and health and safety documentation.
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or related HR certification is a plus.
