Job Description and Duties

This position reports directly to a Supervising Bridge Engineer in Division of Engineering Services (DES) / Structure Construction (SC). The incumbent is responsible for and manages a staff of engineering employees on multiple structure projects while managing field staff on smaller structure projects. This position is located in Corona.

Working Conditions

Position located at 9225 Stellar Ct Ste B, Corona, Riverside County

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While at their base of operation, incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. In the office setting, must be able to walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. As a statewide organization, DES adjusts to periods of fluctuation workload to successfully deliver projects. Incumbent will be required to travel and perform fieldwork. May be exposed to loud noises, dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, odor chemicals, extreme weather conditions and sunlight while out in the field. May be required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold as low as 15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet or snow. Incumbent may be required to work on urban roadways at night under artificial light. Work consists of five. eight-hour days. Travel, overtime and/or night work may be required. May work around bulky/heavy materials and equipment used in t the vicinity of inspection areas. May also be exposed to the motoring public. Extensive travel may be required; therefore, incumbent must be able to travel using a car or commercial transportation. Regular and punctual attendance is required. DES employees may be given temporary assignments on DES projects throughout the State as workload demands. Personal safety requirements include:

  1. Work boots, in good & sturdy condition, must be worn to provide foot & ankle support & protection.
  2. Either long or short-sleeved shirts & a safety vest, must be worn on or around the job site.
  3. Long pants must be worn on or around the job site. No shorts or cut-offs are permitted.
  4. Provided safety gear (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, safety vests, hearing protection devices, gloves, respirator & other safety gear) must be worn when required by the Department.

Special Requirements

  • This position(s) requires(s) a valid Professional Engineering (Civil) License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment.

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License is required when operating a State or personal vehicle on official business in performance of their duties driving to various field locations as required.

  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.

SOQ must be typed and no more than 2 pages, single-spaced, using 12-point Aptos font. Applicants must include the SOQ questions in their submitted response and provide detailed answers to each question. Each response must clearly incorporate the question and describe the applicant’s relevant experience, accomplishments, and qualifications related to the position.

1. Describe how your qualifications and experience make you a strong candidate for this position. Include the number of years you have served as a Structures Representative and identify significant projects you have worked on, including the project cost and delivery method. Provide examples from your experience that demonstrate your ability to successfully perform the key duties outlined in the duty statement.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of supervisory and management skills and responsibilities (e.g., work balancing, developing budgets, employee safety, employee development, employee conduct and discipline).

3. Describe your knowledge and experience of emergency response to a structure related incident.

4. Demonstrate your ability to negotiate and communicate effectively, both orally and inwriting (e.g., writing technical reports, group presentations, and public forums).

5. Describe your knowledge and experience in bridge construction methods and engineering, bridge rehabilitation and maintenance techniques, structural analysis, project development process, procedures, and philosophies.
