Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Supervisor II, the Supervisor I is responsible for the Health (Medical Leave Management) Unit (Health Unit). The incumbent supervises, plans, directs, reviews, monitors, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff. This position works closely with all California State Lottery (Lottery) staff, supervisors, and managers to provide consultation and direction regarding return-to-work and health issues. The Sup I will oversee medically related personnel issues as they relate to medical leave absences, Reasonable Accommodation (RA), Worker's Compensation, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and other health-related topics.

This position is headquartered in Sacramento and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. Employees must be able to report to their assigned headquarters office as assigned. Travel expense to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee. Eligibility for telework requires the employee to reside in California per California Government Code Section 14200 which states: “telecommuting means the partial or total substitution of computers or telecommunication technologies, or both, for the commute to work by employees residing in California.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours for Personal Leave hours each month. Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Excellent and demonstrateable written and verbal communcation skills.
  • Experience working with management on medical management cases.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Workers' Compensation Cases Management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Return to Work Coordination.
  • Knowledge of and experience with protected leave (FMLA, CFRA, etc.)
  • Experience developing training for supervisors and managers.
  • Ability to facilitate training for supervisors and managers organization wide.
  • Strong desire to provide outstanding Customer Service.
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities with varying deadlines.
  • Ability to recruit, train and retain competent staff.
