Political Affairs Representative
Based in San Dimas, CA
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for developing, managing and conducting political action campaigns; training and engaging Affiliate leadership and Union members in how to conduct political campaigns, and assisting with Union lobbying efforts. The Political Affairs Representative will achieve these goals through the creative and discretionary exercise of all responsibilities and activities outlined below.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES (include but are not limited):
- Represents the Union with other progressive political activists, organizations, political parties central labor councils, and their leaders; develops plans and strategies for political action for the Union.
- Monitors political developments, issues and topics by meeting with officials of political research and policy institutions and attending coalition group briefings.
- Represents the Union and its Affiliates at Central Labor Councils; recruits Affiliate members to attend and participate in CLC activities.
- Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops for Affiliate leadership, activists and Union members in how to become politically involved.
- Coordinates and organizes Union members to participate in the Political and Legislative Department’s activities.
- Coordinates membership drives for the PEOPLE PAC.
- Works with Union’s Employers where possible to leverage existing Employer community benefit programs.
- Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops for Affiliate leadership and Union members on how to perform various assignments within a campaign, i.e., developing budget, targeting precincts, developing campaign strategy, writing/producing/distributing voter information material, establishing phone banks, seeking media coverage, get-out-the vote crews, recruiting volunteers, conducting fundraising events, candidate appearances, working with other unions and coalitions of organizations and conducting voter surveys.
- Conceptualizes, develops and modifies workshop materials for currency and to fit specific UNAC/UHCP interests on selected campaign issues and topics. Conceptualizes, develops and conducts workshops to acquaint Union members with the issues and UNAC/UHCP’s position.
- Serves as UNAC/UHCP’s principle liaison to candidates' campaign staffs.
- Represents UNAC/UHCP at political action coalition gatherings participating in the deliberations and preparing reports outlining conclusions reached. May conduct training sessions for other union organizations on topics of mutual interest.
- Performs work as required/assigned by the Director of Political and Legislative Affairs including Internal/External organizing work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.A. or B.S., in a relevant field.
- Six or more years of experience working in a similar capacity.Ability to develop, organize and manage grassroots programs and operations.
- Background in the labor movement, or progressive movements, and/or elected official staff.
- Political organizing experience.
- Knowledge of federal/state/local campaign financial regulations and laws.
- Knowledge of campaign targeting; techniques.
- Ability to assess political situations and develop appropriate campaign strategies.
- Ability to develop, organize and manage grassroots programs and operations.
- Ability to develop training curriculum and conduct workshops
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing into large group settings.
- Ability to work well independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and interact effectively with Affiliate leadership and Union members.
- Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work.;
- Ability to develop training curriculum and conduct workshops.
- Extensive travel may be required; valid current California Drivers License.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE:
Salary $79.303/hr – $98.609/hr. We provide a comprehensive package including medical and dental benefits for employee and dependents, optical allowance for employee and dependents, life Insurance for employee, defined benefit pension plan, 401K and flexible spending accounts, auto allowance or employer-leased vehicle, education program which includes tuition/course reimbursement and paid time off to take approved courses, vacation, sick leave, holidays, flexible personal time off, plus time off between Christmas day and New Year’s day. This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with United Nurses Staff Union (UNSU). Salaries and benefits are subject to change based on future Collective Bargaining Agreements.
