The City of Wheatland is accepting applications for Police Officer and Reserve Police Officer. (APPLICATION DEADLINE IS CONTINUOS UNTIL FILLED) Applications may be found on the City of Wheatland's website, City Hall or at the Police Department.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision from the Police Sergeant, to perform a variety of duties in law enforcement and crime prevention programs; to maintain order and a safe environment for the citizens of Wheatland; to participate in criminal investigations and crime prevention programs, and to provide a variety of duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.

  1. Patrol a designated area of the City to maintain law and order; respond to calls for service or prevent crime; response areas include accidents, burglaries, domestic disputes, vandalism and related emergency/non-emergency calls, apprehend and arrest individuals accused of crimes.
  2. Gather, preserve, process and maintain chain of custody for evidence according to established policies and procedures.
  3. Conduct investigations, secure crime scenes, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and take statements; prepare and submit official incident and investigative report s; provide testimony on criminal cases in court hearings.
  4. Provide traffic control at traffic accident scenes, congested areas, schools, and special events; respond to traffic related accidents.
  5. Enforce parking restrictions and regulations, issue citations.
  6. Provide information to the general public on law enforcement policies and procedures, traffic rules and regulations and related enforcement standards.
  7. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Ideal Candidate

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services and activities of a municipal law enforcement agency.
  • Modern law enforcement methods and techniques including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control and investigations.
  • Methods and techniques on the use and care of specialized police equipment, including firearms. Principles of business correspondence and basic report preparation.
  • Geographic location of city streets.
  • Rules and regulations governing chain of custody and evidence. Federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Perform a variety of law enforcement duties including patrol, traffic, investigations and crime prevention.
  • Gather, preserve, store and maintain chain of custody for evidence.
  • Interview victims and witnesses of crimes and accurately convey information obtained. Safely and accurately utilize firearms and related equipment.
  • Interpret, explain and apply law enforcement rules and regulations consistent with established policy. Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with City staff, outside agencies and the public. Maintain physical condition necessary to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the above requirements is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by college level course work in police science, criminal justice or a related field.
Experience: Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.

License, Certificate, Registration Requirements:
Possession of a valid California driver license appropriate for equipment operated. Possession of a POST Academy Graduation Certificate (Entry Level)
Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate issued by the State of California (Lateral Applicants).

Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in an emergency peace officer environment. Physical requirements consistent with P.O.S.T. standards.
