Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Research Data Supervisor I of the Criminal Justice Statistics Center (CJSC), the Research Data Specialist (RDS) I has skills, knowledge, and abilities above the journey level and develops, implements, maintains, and enhances protocols for the quality control of statistical databases, in particular, implements and interprets statistical reasonableness tests. The RDS I periodically serves as the lead for the Research Data Analyst IIs who ensure the quality of the data collected by the CJSC. The RDS I acts as the subject matter expert on quality control procedures and advanced statistical methods, as well as assists with publications. The RDS I also independently conducts complicated studies which require advanced research and statistical techniques.

Working Conditions

This position is designated for telework under Government Code section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California and may require reporting to headquarters or field offices and facilities to fulfill operational needs. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Justice policies.

This position is eligible for telework, and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

  • Ability to apply problem-solving techniques to identify and resolve issues in completing work assignments.
  • Ability to manage a workload consisting of multiple projects and assignments.
  • Ability to complete work under critical timelines to meet project objectives and deadlines.
  • Ability to be objective and flexible to adapt to changes in priorities and work assignments.
  • Experience developing and evaluating alternatives, recommendations, solutions, and conclusions or approaches to research problems.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice process.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Develop and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrate tact and good judgment.
  • Experience with statistical packages, such as SPSS or SAS.
  • Experience with independent research or being part of a research team.
  • Experience querying, mining, analyzing, and manipulating data.
  • Experience implementing and interpreting statistical reasonableness tests.
  • Experience designing and validating studies and analyzing the accuracy of data collected.
  • Experience identifying required data, information, materials, and resources needed to complete/perform a project.
