Background:
WPIC is a Whole Person Care model that works collaboratively in small teams to
engage and stabilize high risk and high vulnerability adult homeless individuals and to
help prevent harmful effects of homelessness, establish care for chronic conditions and
transition patients to effective healthcare.

The Senior Psychiatric Physician Specialist serves as a leader and subject matter
expert as a member of a multidisciplinary team that includes health workers, community
peer workers, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians and social workers.
WPIC works collaboratively with other SFDPH and city programs serving people
experiencing homelessness.
The Senior Psychiatric Physician Specialist will work with the multidisciplinary team and
partner organizations to provide transitional healthcare while providing engagement and
support to facilitate linkage to ongoing, clinic-based care or until the patient has been
placed in a higher level of care.
Applicants should be comfortable with the principles of harm reduction and have a
commitment to serving adults experiencing homelessness who may have severe
substance use and mental health disorders.

The Senior Psychiatric Physician Specialist will provide services primarily in low
barrier/outreach settings including streets and parks, congregate and non-congregate
shelters, sobering centers, and permanent supportive housing sites. Services may also
be provided in office, urgent, and drop-in clinic settings.

Maria X Martinez Health Access Center (WPIC Urgent Care/Open Access Clinic)
Street Health
Shelter Health
RESTORE (Shelter + SUD Treatment)
Permanent Supportive Housing Health Services
Medical Respite/Managed Alcohol Program (MAP)
DPH Sobering Center
Enhanced Care Management (Street Med and PHACS)
LOCATION : 555 Stevenson St. and various streets parks and shelters, San Francisco
SCHEDULE/SHIFT : Generally, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, hours may vary, and evening
and weekend shifts may be required

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine issued by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California;
  • Successful completion of an accredited residency program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or American Osteopathic Association in a Psychiatric medical specialty area (i.e., Board Eligible);
  • Possession of valid Drug Enforcement Agency registration with the United States Department of Justice (Special Condition)

SOME OF THE DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Desire to work with high risk/high vulnerability people experiencing homelessness in
    an inner city setting, who have multiple chronic problems, which may include
    medical, mental health, substance use and cognitive impairment
  • Greater than 2 years experience providing direct psychiatric care to vulnerable
    underserved populations with Serious Mental Illness (including but not limited to
    Psychotic Disorder, Bipolar, PTSD; may include Residency training in safety-net
    settings)
  • Experience with crisis management, assessment for involuntary psychiatric holds
    and need for conservatorship
  • Previous experience or training in working with People Experiencing Homelessness
    and persons with comorbid psychiatric and substance use diagnoses
  • Experience, knowledge and skills in Addiction Medicine particularly prescribing
    buprenorphine for patients with opioid use disorder
  • Experience, knowledge and skills in gender affirming health care
    High degree of flexibility with experience working in unconventional healthcare
    settings
