The Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Court Facilities Manager.

Under the general direction of the Court Human Resources Director, the Facilities Manager oversees all operational, maintenance, and project management functions for the Court’s facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety, functionality, and efficiency of Court buildings and related infrastructure through strategic planning, contract management, and compliance with applicable building codes and regulations.

The Facilities Manager serves as the Court’s subject matter expert in facilities management, building systems, capital improvement projects, and provides leadership in the development and implementation of long-term facility plans that support operational effectiveness and sustainability.

This hands-on position will interact with facilities and janitorial staff on a regular basis and will perform physical work and respond to calls.

This position functions at the management level and is distinguished by its responsibility for strategic oversight of facilities operations, maintenance, and safety programs. The incumbent exercises independent judgment and technical expertise in facilities planning, procurement, and compliance. The Court Facilities Manager exercises direct and indirect supervision over facilities, custodial, and maintenance personnel and oversees contractors, consultants, and vendors performing services for the Court.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop, manage, and monitor facilities-related contracts and procurement activities in compliance with state and local government regulations.
  • Provide hands-on project management by planning, organizing, and directing the maintenance, repair, and operation of all Court facilities, including HVAC, electrical, mechanical, janitorial, plumbing, and security systems.
  • Conduct regular onsite inspections of buildings, courtrooms, offices, and mechanical rooms to identify maintenance needs, safety issues, and facility deficiencies.
  • Perform or assist with basic building and furniture repairs, including assembling workstations, adjusting or repairing chairs, fixing door hardware, patching drywall, replacing ceiling tiles, and troubleshooting office equipment or environmental issues.
  • Respond to urgent facilities issues – such as water leaks, electrical problems, access issues, heating/cooling failures, or safety hazards – by assessing the situation and either performing immediate corrective action or coordinating vendor response.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance and capital improvement programs aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Apply facilities management principles to assess and improve space utilization, building performance, and workflow efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, OSHA, Cal-OSHA, ADA, fire, and safety standards through regular walkthroughs, documentation, and corrective follow-up.
  • Coordinate and oversee construction, renovation, and relocation projects from design through completion, including hands-on support with furniture installation, cubicle layout adjustments, moving equipment, and preparing spaces for staff use.
  • Conduct ergonomic evaluations for staff, including adjusting chairs, desks, and equipment; making recommendations for ergonomic accessories; and physically demonstrating or installing corrective adjustments.
  • Provide hands-on support during office moves by coordinating movers, ensuring proper placement of furniture, reconnecting basic equipment, and verifying that spaces are functional and safe.
  • Develop and manage budgets for facilities operations, maintenance, and capital projects; monitor expenditures and forecast future resource needs.
  • Lead project planning, including defining scope, schedules, budgets, and performance metrics; track progress using project management methodologies.
  • Serve as liaison to the Judicial Council of California, County of San Mateo, and other agencies on matters related to facilities maintenance and capital improvements.
  • Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and strategic plans to executive management.
  • Promote a culture of safety and sustainability; monitor regulatory changes and update procedures accordingly.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned staff and ensure effective coordination among maintenance, custodial, security, and administrative teams.
  • Maintain project statuses with vendors and ensure timely completion of facilities-related projects on behalf of the Superior Court.
  • Perform physical facilities work as needed, including lifting/moving equipment, transporting supplies, climbing ladders, inspecting areas with limited access, conducting safety walkthroughs, and assisting during emergencies or high-priority tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
