System Test Engineer
What to Expect
Heron Power is a startup company building cutting-edge power electronics for the 21st-century grid. We aim to debottleneck the growth of electricity generation and consumption with scalable, innovative, and less costly hardware solutions, accelerating the electrification of everything.
Our first goal is to build better converters (inverters & rectifiers) to connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. Heron’s leadership team is made up of seasoned veterans who have designed and shipped gigawatts of power conversion products over the past decade.
We understand that no one individual knows everything. We will all learn a lot together and from each other. We strive to build a collaborative, enriching environment conducive to personal, technical, and career growth. You can expect to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, driven by first principles engineering, solving difficult problems.
Job Overview
Uptime, availability and reliability are critical to our converters (inverters & rectifiers) that connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads like datacenters to the grid. This is a unique role that lives in the intersection of Systems Test and Reliability Test engineering. In this role, you will have a systems level view of Heron’s products and understand the theory-of-operation of the entire system. You will be responsible for developing system level testing and long term accelerated life / degradation testing of our products. In this role, you will get to roll your sleeves up and make things happen by building test setups, and executing tests.
How You Will Contribute
You will play a critical role in validating our products for performance and reliability.
Design and build robust test setups that replicate real-world conditions, stressing systems to monitor performance accurately.
Perform hands-on work building test setups, fixtures, and test article instrumentation to successfully execute test plans.
Develop innovative test methods beyond standard practices to validate our products efficiently.
Define requirements for both subsystem and system-level integrated hardware testing.
Develop comprehensive test strategies and plans aligned with these requirements.
Execute automated and manual system tests
Collaborate with product design teams by providing valuable systems and reliability engineering feedback for product design, verification, and validation.
What You Will Bring
We prioritize a strong foundation in first principles, practical skills, an inquisitive mindset, and a proactive attitude. Domain-specific knowledge and experience will help determine the career level for each hire.
Must-Have Requirements
Strong engineering fundamentals, including a thorough understanding of high voltage electronics and power systems including DCDC and DCAC converters.
Hands-on experience testing high voltage inverter and converter systems
2+ years of practical experience setting up hardware-in-the-loop testers from the ground up, including instrumentation and automation software.
Proven experience in defining and executing testing strategies throughout the product development lifecycle.
Experience in writing test automation software using Python, LabVIEW for hardware-in-the-loop testers.
Hands-on experience building data acquisition systems using oscilloscopes, data loggers, power analyzers.
Proficiency in Linux
An innate curiosity to learn and ask insightful questions.
Nice-to-Haves
Experience working with Medium Voltage systems (5kV-35kV)
Experience in Reliability Engineering and developing accelerated life test plans.
Experience with grid-tied inverters or industrial power electronics systems.
Background in Systems Engineering with experience in requirements verification.
Experience with compliance testing of grid tied applications.
If you are passionate about technology and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, we would love to hear from you. Join us in accelerating the electrification of everything at Heron Power.
Heron Power provides competitive compensation (salary and equity) and benefits. The salary for this role ranges from $120,000 to $175,000 per year.
