Manufacturing Test Engineer - Lasers
Lightmatter is leading the revolution in AI data center infrastructure, enabling the next giant leaps in human progress. The company invented the world’s first 3D-stacked photonics engine, Passage™, capable of connecting thousands to millions of processors at the speed of light in extreme-scale data centers for the most advanced AI and HPC workloads.
Lightmatter raised $400 million in its Series D round, reaching a valuation of $4.4 billion. We will continue to accelerate the development of data center photonics and grow every department at Lightmatter!
If you're passionate about tackling complex challenges, making an impact, and being an expert in your craft, join our team of brilliant scientists, engineers, and accomplished industry leaders.
Lightmatter is (re)inventing the future of computing with light!
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Manufacturing Test Engineer - Lasers to drive the development and implementation of test strategies for cutting-edge laser modules through all phases of the product lifecycle—from prototyping to high-volume manufacturing (HVM). You will serve as a key technical interface between R&D, Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) partners, and internal manufacturing teams to ensure high-yield, high-quality laser module builds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop comprehensive test strategies for laser module manufacturing, including optical, electrical, and mechanical test coverage.
- Determine critical test points by understanding laser-device behavior and its interaction with assembly processes (e.g., die attach, fiber attach, alignment, bonding)
- Collaborate with OSATs to develop and validate test plans for New Product Introduction (NPI), prototype, and HVM builds.
- Design and implement in-line and end-of-line test coverage to identify process-induced performance and reliability issues.
- Specify, deploy, and support automated and semi-automated test systems and data acquisition platforms.
- Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts to optimize yield, performance, and quality metrics.
- Work cross-functionally with R&D, Product Engineering, Reliability, Process, and Packaging teams to close test gaps and ensure manufacturability.
- Review and refine test limits, calibration protocols, and data correlation across production sites and builds.
- Support reliability qualification, failure analysis, and test method validation (TMV) as needed.
Required Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related field
- 12 years of industry experience in photonics or optoelectronic component test, with emphasis on laser modules (e.g., DFB, EML, VCSEL, or similar).
- 2 years of experience working with or managing OSATs for photonic or optoelectronic module assembly and test.
- Understanding of laser device physics and sensitivity to assembly-induced variations (e.g., thermal resistance, alignment drift, mode instability).
- Knowledge of test instrumentation like laser sources, optical power meters, spectrum analyzers and fiber optics.
- Proficient in data analysis (Python, JMP, or MATLAB)
- Demonstrated experience developing and qualifying test processes for NPI through ramp to volume.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related discipline, with 8+ years of industry experience
- Knowledge of laser burn-in, screening, and life test methods.
- Familiarity with industry reliability standards (Telcordia, JEDEC) and qualification flows
- Experience with manufacturing MES systems and yield dashboards.
- Ability to travel occasionally to OSAT or internal manufacturing sites.
We offer competitive compensation. The base salary range for this role determined based on location, experience, educational background, and market data.
Salary Range
$189,000—$256,000 USD
Benefits
- Comprehensive Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
- Retirement Savings Matching Program
- Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
- Generous Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
- Paid Family Leave
- Short Term & Long Term Disability
- Training & Development
