About the Role:

We are looking for a Staff Full-stack Software Engineer who thrives in ambiguity, takes ownership of complex problems, and rapidly delivers high-quality solutions. While this is a full-stack role, it is heavily backend and data-focused, requiring strong expertise in scalable backend system design, data engineering, and productionizing APIs.

This is a high-impact, high-autonomy position where you will be expected to contribute immediately, guiding architectural decisions, mentoring engineers, and shipping production-ready code. While frontend experience is valuable, the ideal candidate will focus primarily on backend APIs, data models, and infrastructure while ensuring seamless system integration across the stack. This is a hybrid role based out of our San Francisco, CA office.

Description:

• Architect, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using Python (FastAPI, Django, or Flask).

• Design and optimize data pipelines, ETL workflows, and database schemas to support analytics and AI-driven applications.

• Work across the stack, contributing to frontend development (Next.js, TypeScript) when needed, while maintaining a backend-first focus.

• Ensure high-performance, reliability, and security in a HIPAA-compliant environment.

• Own complex, ambiguous technical challenges and deliver high-impact solutions with minimal guidance.

• Conduct in-depth code reviews and mentor junior engineers, setting a high technical bar.

• Collaborate with product and data science teams to deliver customer-focused solutions.

• Implement CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and observability to improve development velocity.

• Stay ahead of emerging technologies and advocate for best practices in system design, performance, and security.

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a Staff-level role.

• Deep expertise in Python and backend frameworks (FastAPI, Django, Flask).

• Proven experience in data engineering, including ETL pipelines, database performance optimization, and data modeling.

• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or other modern databases (relational and NoSQL).

• Experience designing and building scalable, production-grade APIs (REST, OpenAPI, GraphQL).

• Solid understanding of authentication, authorization (OAuth, SAML, JWT), and security best practices.

• Hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure as code.

• Strong leadership, communication, and mentorship skills; able to drive technical decisions and level up the team.

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment with minimal direction.

Bonus Points:

• Experience working with data lakehouses, Apache Spark, or Databricks.

• Knowledge of Next.js, TypeScript, and frontend frameworks (though this is not a frontend-heavy role).

• Prior experience in healthcare, compliance-heavy environments, or AI-driven applications.
