POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic General Superintendent to lead and oversee all field operations related to underground wet utility construction , including the installation of water, sewer, storm drain, and fire line systems . This leadership role is responsible for coordinating and supervising superintendents, foremen, and crews while ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and with high quality.

The General Superintendent plays a key role in project planning, problem-solving, team development, and collaboration with project managers and other stakeholders. This position demands a flexible, proactive professional with strong field expertise, people management skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-evolving construction environment.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Field Operations & Project Execution

  • Oversee daily field operations and ensure alignment with project schedules, budgets, and safety/quality standards.
  • Supervise and support multiple crews, superintendents, and subcontractors across various active job sites.
  • Review and interpret construction documents, plans, and specifications for accuracy and constructability.
  • Coordinate materials, equipment, inspections, and manpower to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Develop and manage site logistics and short-term look-ahead schedules (3 and 6 weeks).
  • Resolve field conflicts and adapt to unforeseen issues with creative problem-solving.
  • Ensure compliance with all project specifications, industry regulations, and company policies.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Mentor and evaluate Superintendents, Foremen, and field staff to promote skill development and performance.
  • Conduct onboarding, training, and safety orientations for field personnel.
  • Organize and lead regular project and foreman meetings, including MAP and 1-on-1s with Superintendents.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, and managing field personnel, including disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Construction and other departments to ensure operational alignment.

Safety, Risk, & Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture; lead by example and enforce strict adherence to OSHA and company safety guidelines.
  • Conduct and oversee regular job site safety audits in coordination with the Safety Manager.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE, maintain organized and safe work areas, and respond promptly to incidents or injuries.

Equipment & Resource Management

  • Monitor and manage utilization of company equipment and materials across all projects.
  • Coordinate with the Equipment and Fleet departments to ensure proper maintenance and usage.
  • Track craft productivity and ensure efficient manpower scheduling.

Communication & Reporting

  • Act as a key liaison between field and office staff, providing daily/weekly updates on progress, challenges, and productivity.
  • Ensure timely and accurate timekeeping, task coding, and documentation using construction software.
  • Promote open communication across teams to optimize collaboration and field execution.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify and implement improvements in processes, safety practices, and operational efficiency.
  • Stay up to date on industry standards, technology, and best practices.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certifications or trade school preferred. Associate’s/bachelor’s degree in construction management or civil engineering a plus.
  • Minimum 10–12 years of experience in underground wet utilities construction, with at least 4 years in a supervisory or superintendent-level role.
  • Extensive knowledge of trenching, shoring, pipe installation, and underground utility construction methods.
  • Proven leadership ability managing multiple complex projects and field teams.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specs, and construction documents.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred: strong understanding of safety protocols and risk mitigation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and construction-related software (e.g., PlanGrid, Bluebeam, COINS, PlanSwift).
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • This position requires 75-80% of time in the field across various job sites

OTHER CRITERIA:

  • Travel: Regular travel to construction sites required.
  • Must comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Expected to perform duties with a high degree of professionalism, respect, and safety for people and property.

  • Ability to lift, push and pull materials to complete assigned job tasks.

Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000
