Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor I, the Analyst I provides basic analytical and technical support to the Bureau's Firearms and Baton Licensing Unit by reviewing and processing incoming applications (initial and renewal), corresponding with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding Firearm Qualification Applications (FQA), corresponding with the Bureau's vendor regarding applicant's taking the Firearms Assessment and providing customer services to Bureau applicants and licensees.

Working Conditions

Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview. However, they must reside in the State of California once they are hired and start working.

Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee's monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period as outlined on "Section 2113 - Personal Leave Program (PLP)" of the CalHR Manual. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.

The incumbent works 40 hours per week in an office setting, with artificial light and temperature control. The ability to use a personal computer and telephone is essential. The position requires bending and stooping whenever it is necessary to retrieve files. The ability to tactfully handle communications of various tones and temperaments from the public (including licensees) is essential. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential part of this job.

Special Requirements

Criminal Offender Record Information: Title 11, section 703 (d) of the California Code of Regulations requires criminal record checks of all personnel who have access to Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI). Pursuant to this requirement, applicants for this position will be required to submit fingerprints to the Department of Justice and be cleared before hiring. In accordance to DCA's (CORI) procedures, clearance shall be maintained while employed in a CORI-designated position. Additionally, the position routinely works with sensitive and confidential issues and/or materials and is expected to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of documents and topics pertaining to individuals or to sensitive program materials at all times.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Incumbent must possess good communication skills, use good judgment in decision-making, exercise creativity and flexibility in problem identification and resolution, manage time and resources effectively, and be responsive to Bureau management needs. Confidentiality and discretion are required due to the nature and sensitivity of the documents handled. Incumbent works with considerable independence in evaluating documents submitted by applicants and ensuring qualifications are met. This position requires detailed knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to Bureau licensing requirements, specifically the issuance of firearm permits for Bureau licensees.
