Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Supervisor (SUP) I, the Crime Analyst Supervisor (CAS) is the full supervisory level responsible for the supervision and administration of the Eligibility Clearance Unit (ECU). The CAS is responsible for assisting the ECU staff with analyzing criminal history and other firearms eligibility related records to determine eligibility of persons to own or possess firearms and/or ammunition. The CAS is also responsible for ensuring the operations involving the firearm and/or ammunition eligibility process is completed accurately and in a timely manner, or within the legislatively mandated timeframe. The CAS identifies, recommends, and implements changes to existing procedures and/or processes in order to increase overall efficiency; acts as a section liaison with other programs/units within the Department as well as external clients to resolve possible problems with criminal history and other firearms eligibility related records; performs supervisory duties related to employee hiring, training, development, and evaluation. The CAS must have a thorough knowledge of California statutory code sections, the criminal justice system, and the laws and regulations governing eligibility to purchase or possess firearms and or ammunition in California.

Working Conditions

DOJ has adopted telework for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. After an initial training period, this position may allow for some telework opportunities. All telework schedules are based on current conditions and may be reevaluated as conditions change.

Knowledge of: data reporting procedures, requirements, statutes, and regulations in order to identify problems and develop solutions; knowledge of auditing principles and methods to verify compliance with various federal, state, and local statutes and regulations; and functions and organization of various agencies in the criminal justice system; and methods, techniques, procedures, and terminology used in types of crimes, laws, regulations, and the criminal justice system from arrest through conviction, incarceration, parole or probation; techniques and principles of personnel management, supervision, and in-service training; and a manager's responsibility for promoting equal opportunity in hiring and employee development and promotion, and for maintaining a work environment which is free of discrimination and harassment.

Ability to: determine the needs of a specialized work unit; facilitate information sharing; apply creative thinking; conduct needs assessment to identify specific requirements; collect, research, and evaluate various program operations; and develop, prepare, and present analytical and statistical reports.
