Job Description and Duties

SKILLED LABORER (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) / NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT / NATURAL RESOURCES / SUE-MEG STATE PARK

The reporting location for this position is 4150 Patrick’s Point Drive, Trinidad, CA 95570 at Sue-Meg State Park . This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor.)

Under the supervision, the incumbent performs skilled physical labor in support of natural resource maintenance and restoration projects. Duties include invasive plant removal using manual and herbicide methods; assisting with prescribed fire area preparation, and mop-up; vegetation removal; site cleanup; and planting and maintaining native vegetation. The position safely operates and maintains hand tools, small equipment, and vehicles, and works with or may provide work direction to State Parks staff, CCC crews, Cal Fire crews, contractors, and volunteers to ensure compliance with project requirements and environmental permits. Responsibilities also include documenting field work through written records, photographs, basic spatial data collection using handheld GPS devices, and completing vehicle inspections and monthly logs.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

The work schedule is Monday through Thursday 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year , with potential for extension.

This position requires a Class C Driver's license. Please provide proof of eligibility with application.

Working Conditions

Perform minor strenuous labor (e.g., carrying up to 40 lbs.) and navigate and hike two to five miles in coastal and forested environments. Physical work outdoors in various weather conditions. During prescribed fire operations employee will be exposed to smoke and heat and may be required to work long hours and weekends/holidays. As safety allows, work continues in all types of weather.

Have the ability to identify flora of northern California. Have field orientation skills and familiarity with electronic data collection. Be ATV certified to operate 4-wheel drive trucks and ATV’s.
