Sales / Preconstruction (Mechanical Contractor)
Summary
A well-established mechanical contracting firm based in San Diego, specializing in commercial HVAC, plumbing, piping, and building systems, is seeking an experienced Sales / Preconstruction professional . The ideal candidate combines deep technical knowledge of mechanical construction with a strong background in business development, proposal management, value engineering, and closing complex commercial projects. This role is client-facing and strategic, requiring close coordination with estimating, operations, and project teams to turn opportunities into profitable work while maintaining quality, client trust, and company reputation.
Duties & Responsibilities
Lead business development initiatives by identifying, qualifying, and pursuing new commercial clients (GCs, design-build teams, owners, facility managers) while strengthening existing relationships through proactive engagement and consistent follow-up.
Oversee the full preconstruction and sales process for assigned pursuits, including document review, takeoffs, scope development, subcontractor/vendor pricing, and conceptual to detailed estimating.
Prepare compelling proposals and technical presentations that clearly define scope, highlight value engineering options, and communicate schedule and risk considerations; present to clients and negotiate terms as required.
Collaborate with estimating, engineering, project management, and field teams to ensure constructability, accurate pricing, and a seamless handoff from bid to execution. Provide market feedback and input on competitive strategy.
Maintain responsibility for proposal margins — identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring profitability targets are met.
Utilize CRM software (e.g., Salesforce) to track leads, manage pipelines, and report on activities, revenue forecasts, and win/loss trends.
Represent the company at industry functions, design meetings, and networking events, positioning the firm as a trusted technical resource and long-term partner.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
5+ years of experience in mechanical contracting preconstruction, estimating, or technical sales (commercial HVAC, plumbing, or piping preferred).
Demonstrated success in selling or estimating mechanical construction projects, with a track record of closed contracts or qualified pipeline results.
Strong understanding of mechanical systems — including HVAC, hydronic, ductwork, piping, and controls — with the ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
Proficiency in takeoff/estimating software and construction tools; advanced Excel skills and familiarity with CRM systems (Salesforce strongly preferred).
Strong commercial acumen with proven negotiation, presentation, and client relationship management skills; ability to maintain and improve gross margins.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally for client and jobsite meetings.
Preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Business, or a related discipline — or equivalent trade/industry experience.
Background in estimating and field operations, with the ability to advise on constructibility and project execution.
Relevant certifications or continuing education (e.g., LEED, ASHRAE, OSHA 30) related to mechanical construction or sales.
Experience developing relationships and driving business with general contractors, end-users, and design teams within the San Diego market (or similar).
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive base salary plus commission/bonus tied to closed sales and margin performance.
Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, 401(k), paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
